Cold Springs Farm Wins at World Dairy Cattle Show

Meythaler's Cold Springs Farm of Monroe led the grand champion Brown Swiss female, Isabelle Lorraine, a four year old, to robe crown and trophy at Madison's World Dairy Cattle Show. Orbie Sherry of Viroqua shared champion honors with a two year old bull, Mound View Bings Jud, sold to Venezuela for state breeding. Sherry, noted for Jane of Vernon in the 1930s, returns to show ring. Voegeli Farm Monticello won reserve junior champion female and produce of dam. Other area placings span Dr. Bear Monroe, Voegeli Farm Monticello, Viney Farms Evansville, Meythaler, and Cold Springs in multiple classes.

Sewage and Forestry Measures Tabled by Monroe City Council

The Monroe City Council tabled a forestry ordinance proposal and moved ahead with sewer plant improvements and a new siren testing program to meet federal requests. A public hearing discussed creating an independent forestry commission to manage public tree planting and sale of replacement trees, but City Atty. Schmitz warned it would exceed Park Board jurisdiction, prompting the Oct. 3 table and revised ordinance. William Bauman and Dr. John Usher supported the plan.

Ed Frauchiger of Monroe and Robert Katz of Janesville return from a nine day Midwest tour through Illinois Missouri Arkansas Mississippi and Alabama in time for Cheese Days. Earl Wirth Dies After Highway 11 Crash Near Juta

Earl O. Wirth 67 of Route 2 Monroe died after a four car accident on Highway 1181 three miles east of Juta. He was thrown from his station wagon and died en route to St. Clare Hospital. Deputies say he crossed the centerline on the hilltop straightaway. No others were injured. Coroner calls it accidental. no inquest. Funeral arrangements by Cramer Funeral Home Orangeville. A separate note: Linda Erb 16 of Argus 4H Club reported a Pinto named Lady struck and killed by a vehicle driven by Harry Kempwood Monroe at 1 30 this morning four miles north of Highway 81. Youth Council Sets Meeting Thursday To Launch Season

The Monroe Youth Council will begin preparations for the 1967 68 year with a Thursday night meeting at 7 in the Community Center. Officers will be elected and October activities planned. Membership costs $2 for the year and grants center privileges and reduced dances. Only Monroe High and Junior High students may join.

Henry Babler Jr Honored On Moose Night At Monroe Lodge

Henry Babler Jr was saluted at Moose Night in Monroe as new lodge members joined after his long service. He received a Moose billfold and a sport coat gift certificate while secretary Lyle Sickinger praised his loyalty and leadership. Babler, a 1930 initiate and former trustee, remains active as club steward and mentor.

Monroe School Enrollment Grows Slightly for 1967 68

Total enrollment in the Monroe School System reaches 2,699 for 1967 68, up 30 students or one percent from last year. Senior High has 884 students, Junior High 406, with notable increases in grades seven and eight. Individual school and grade counts, kindergarten to twelfth grade, are listed along with staffing notes and two school closings.

Postal Services Day will be observed Saturday September 23 in Monroe with ZIP A LIST kits issued to households. Postmaster R J Myers urged use of ZIP Codes in addresses, eight cards per home, no postage, and return addresses required for delivery accuracy. Extra kits available at the post office.
