American teacher earns Tasmanian research grant in Albany
James Thalacker, Albany High School biology, general science and physics teacher, is the first American to receive an Australian Academy of Science Research Grant. He taught five years in Tasmania, then returned to the United States in 1965. He and his Scotland born wife Ailsa Macdonald live in Albany with the Hein Sisters. Thalacker is a native of Thornapple, Minnesota, studied at Moorhead State College and North Dakota State University and taught in Greenbush Minnesota before heading to Burnie Tasmania. He learned of Australia through Nevil Shute books and decided to teach overseas. The couple met in Tasmania where both were teaching at the same school.

Fun Day At Digman Farm Planned In Monroe
The Fun Day of the Skinner and Smock Valley Watersheds will be held Saturday September 17 at the Kendall Digman farm Route 3 Monroe across from the Hiawatha School. Events include a Junior tractor plowing contest at 9 30 a.m. followed by a Senior plowing at 11 a.m. A tractor pulling contest is set for 2 p.m. Participants must be members of a Watershed group and a lunch stand will operate on the grounds.

Albany co op plans a 30 by 64 foot fertilizer depot and 17,000 gallon storage tank on East Albany property at an estimated 9 500. Robert Rebly announced the plan at a village board meeting as construction set to start November 1. The water system for Hillcrest Cemetery was discussed with plans to extend a six inch main and add outlets while draining for winter. The late Lelia Turner left 10 000 for cemetery water installation with rest to perpetual care.
