The Labor Day holiday period brought a nationwide traffic toll of 605 deaths by midnight Monday, exceeding the prior all time summer holiday high of 563 set last year and the 576 record for the three day Independence Day holiday. It marks the fourth straight major holiday of the year with a new traffic fatality record.
State traffic fatalities over the Labor Day weekend reach nineteen, lifting the year total to 716. The National Safety Council predicted up to 63 deaths over the holiday, with reports still delayed. Major crashes included a nine‑fatality wreck on the Ohio Turnpike near Norwalk and an eight‑fatality crash on US 12 near Coldwater, Michigan.
A five month old from Belleville died in a Labor Day traffic crash on Highway 1 near Evansville. The infant’s family and others were hospitalized or treated, with extensive local crashes and a police pursuit ending in Green County. Officers report heavy holiday traffic and numerous nonfatal injuries across Dane and Green counties.
Carson Hunt 58 of 1602 14th Ave died at 4 20 AM in St. Clare Hospital after a four year illness. Born 1908 in Unionville he was son of Charles and Harriett Hunt. He married Marian Howe Aug 23 1981 in Galena Ill. Surviving are his widow a son Jerome Lee a daughter Beverly Van Wagenen and Judith Ingwell his mother two brothers a sister and six grandchildren. Services 1 30 PM Thursday at Stnessy Funeral Home Rev Milton G Petzold officiating Greenwood Cemetery burial. Friends may call after tomorrow.
The Madie Stauttacher for Assembly Committee was announced for the September primary election. Members include Roger Moe Monroe chairman Delmar Naef New Glarus treasurer Thomas Keyes Darling secretary and William Bruce Monroe trustee. Mrs Stauffacher is a Republican candidate for the Green Lafayette County Assembly seat in a three way race next Tuesday.
Monroe conducts daily noon tests of a new siren replacing the long used unit. A full coordinated test is set for next Tuesday September 13 with Civil Defense officials from federal and state offices and contractors, to assess the warning system for storms and public safety. Residents may call the Municipal Building switchboard to leave comments for Ted Weiss.
Former Assemblyman Paul Alfonsi helped dedicate a $500,000 Highway 51 bridge to Minocqua and urged more road improvements. Convicted in July of accepting a $100 bribe offer, he appeals the conviction that bars him from the Assembly and hopes for re election. Norman Czajka Minocqua Chamber of Commerce president said Alfonsi was chosen as master of ceremonies. He told the audience the bridge dedication should spur safer traffic and lower accident rates north of Wausau.
Daily dairy market report shows cheddar cheese prices steady. Demand is fair to good with current supplies adequate to ample. Cheddars quoted around 48 to 50 percent, 40 pound blocks 48 to 52 percent, single daisies 52 to 93 percent, longhorn 51 to 52 percent, and midgets 52 to 4405 percent.

Red Cross to collect Blood for Defense during Monroe visit on Sept 23. Local officials to coordinate with National Guard officers. Capt. Dwight C. Coplien to record pledged units. If pledges meet targets, weekend training assemblies may not require blood collection. Wisconsin National Guard has pledged nearly 3,000 units.
Esperanza del Valle Vasquez, a 37 year old Mexico City beauty operator, left Methodist Hospital for home four weeks and one day after surgery to install an artificial heart pump. Hospital officials said the pump finally aided recovery six days after the operation as she plans to return to work soon.

A Times Special reports 5 211 people viewed the Wilhelm Tell presentations over the holidays. Alpine Festival drew 1 000 each night, Swiss Historical Village 250 Saturday and 760 Sunday, and 330 Monday night. A free Swiss entertainment program on Saturday morning gathered several hundred. Attendance at the Tell Art Guild outdoor show was not estimated.
Prime Minister Hendrik F. Verwoerd was killed in Cape Town when a parliamentary messenger stabbed him during a session. The 64 year old leader died from multiple knife wounds as blood stained the green carpet. The assailant was subdued by MPs and Verwoerd was pronounced dead at a hospital. Market trading opened cautiously in New York as Labor Day approaches.
