A fire in a chicken house at the August Lehnherr farm five miles southeast of Juda destroyed about 100 chickens after several hundred were saved. Juda and Brodhead fire departments arrived at 5:30 p.m. and used wet water to extinguish the blaze. The 20 by 30 foot frame building burned but adjacent structures were saved despite gale like wind. The cause was believed to be faulty wiring or sparking from a nearby home.

An explosion trapped twelve men deep in a Rayford West Virginia coal mine. Three bodies were recovered hours later, with officials saying the others have only a very long chance of survival. The mine lies about three quarters of a mile back in the mountain.
