The freighter Penobscot rammed the oil barge Morania in Buffalo harbor causing a gasoline explosion that set three vessels ablaze. Captain Louis Guyette and helmsman Roy Richardson died after sacrificing themselves to back the freighter away from the barge.

Las Vegas observers watched a large atomic blast at Yucca Flat described as the third and biggest in the current AEC test series. Postal boosts begin next year
President Truman signed a postal rate bill expanding annual charges by 117 million dollars. The two cent post card goes into effect January 1, 1953 with a 10 percent rise for newspapers and magazines on April 1 next year and additional 10 percent raises in 1953 and 1954. Third class mail rises July 1 1952 via higher minimum bulk rates. Special services rise January 1 with the new 20 cent special delivery stamp. The bill also introduces a graded 13 day to 26 day leave system for 2.2 million federal workers and 13 day sick leave for all government staff. The rate hike aims to reduce the deficit but a projected 520 million remains. An extra 100 million per year comes from higher parcel post rates approved by the ICC. A 10 percent bump applies to bundles of 50 or more post cards bringing cost to 2.2 cents each.
