AFL-CIO moves to back GE strike with multimillion fund

The AFL-CIO has set machinery to raise millions for 13 unions striking General Electric. Meany said three labor leaders will build a war chest via union contributions as the four day dispute continues. Also UW Milwaukee to honor Mrs King Nov 21 with a Woman in Action award. A bill proposed to standardize prescription drug coding to include name, manufacturer dosage and lot number.

Wisconsin beer tax bill heads to Knowles desk

An unprecedented $3.2 million measure would double the beer tax to $2 a barrel, directing new revenues to the Marquette Medical School. The bill, the first Wisconsin beer tax increase since 1933, could be signed by Gov. Warren P. Knowles by Friday as Madison awaits final action on the measure.

Supreme Court Ends All Deliberate Speed for Desegregation

The Supreme Court ruled that the all deliberate speed doctrine cannot shield segregated schools. It ordered Mississippi to immediately operate unitary school systems eliminating racial exclusion and to implement desegregation plans without further delay. The decision, unsigned but attributed to Justice Black, directs New Orleans appeals court to enforce plans by December 1 with possible modifications to ensure unitary systems for all eligible pupils.

DAR Chapter Marks Golden Milestone With Dinner in Brodhead

The Colonel Benjamin Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrates its 50th anniversary with a dinner and program at 1 p.m. Oct 31 at Harris House in Brodhead. State Regent Mrs. James S. McCray will attend as guest of honor and speaker, with Beloit Janesville and Eli Pierce Whitewater chapters invited. The chapter organized May 9 1919, bearing the name of Martha J. Relf’s Revolutionary ancestor. Charter members included Martha C. Relf and Georgia Shriner, and the group has longstanding ties to local history, flags, and patriotism activity.
