Gruenewald elected Monroe Kiwanis Club president

Jacob H. Gruenewald was elected president of the Monroe Kiwanis Club at an afternoon meeting in the Swiss Wheel. He succeeds Dr. Wayne C. Fencil with R. Evans Sr. as vice president and Alvin H. Babler, Arthur Roethe, and Richard Shallberg as directors. The event honored The Monroe Evening Times and Green County Broadcasting Co. for promoting free speech, and showcased religious art from Rev. James C. Plymire at Grace Lutheran Church’s 75th anniversary exhibit.

Burns To Talk In City Monday

Larry Burns director of the first rural workshop for handicapped persons in Shullsburg will speak to the Green County Association for Mentally Retarded Children in Monroe. The 8 p.m. meeting at the Green County Ag building covers the new rehabilitation center and a fund drive planned for Nov 14 with a $7500 goal.

The Luckiest Guy Around Saves Life in Viet Nam

Cpl. Toby E. Goecks credits a home crafted steel plate on his helicopter seat with saving his life during a Viet Nam mission. A Viet Cong sniper bullet struck the plate, tearing his boot heel but leaving him alive. He reported the incident to his parents and described the rapid five to ten second sequence before landing and seeking treatment.

County Residents See Cancer Film At Meeting Here

Green County unit of the American Cancer Society held an all-day orientation at the Swiss Wheel. Dr. Eugene Eckstam spoke on the film Who Me and public cancer education. Observations noted lung cancer linked to smoking, quitting improves health, and 5 000 Americans die yearly from lung cancer with only 5 percent cured.

Professors Dvorak Named Chair for Christmas Seal Drive

Professor Raymond Dvorak, longtime head of UW bands, was named state chairman for the 59th annual Christmas Seal campaign, taking on leadership duties in Milwaukee.

Veteran church worker to mark 75th anniversary events

Ransom Holmes, longtime Grace Lutheran Church Sunday School superintendent and elder, turns 86 on Christmas Eve. He helped build the present edifice in 1921, taught 40 years of Sunday School, sang in the choir last in 1961, and served on the church count. His wife Maud Swartz was the first woman on the council. Holmes is noted for his VIS class of high school students and remains active with daily walks, dominoes, and garden work in Monroe. He lives with daughter Viva Stauffacher, a Lincoln School teacher, and has another daughter Beryl Smith in Janesville, with brother Grover in Evansville.

4-H Touring Troupe to Perform Across Southern Wisconsin

Dianne Siedschlag and Russell Ace head a cohort of 53 4-H musicians in the State 4-H Touring Troupe. They perform Saturday at Monroe Junior High as part of a five day itinerary that includes ten appearances from November 3 to 6. The troupe brightens communities with the musical production Only In America, and admission is free.

Brodhead residents urged to join schools and churches in trick or treat for UNICEF collections. Pennies and nickels will fund milk and vaccines for children with TB, with each penny equivalent to five glasses of milk for a child.

Monroe Student Exchange Trip to North Hills High

Members of the Monroe Student Exchange prepare for a trip starting Friday November 5 at 8 a.m. The group will travel to Louisville Kentucky visit Hodgenville Bardstown and the Daniel Boone Hotel in Charleston West Virginia before arriving in Pittsburgh to study teaching methods and tour industrial sites. They depart North Hills High School November 13 for Chicago overnight at the Bismarck Hotel and are due back in Monroe November 14.

Monticello Halloween Parade Planned by Community Club

The Monticello Community Club will sponsor its annual Halloween parade on Main Street starting at 2 30 in the afternoon. Children meet at the lake east end near Main Street and Highway 39 and march to the fire station. If rain, parade shifts to the high school gym at 7 30 Saturday night.

United Fund Drive Tops Goal with $19,900 Target Surpassed

Campaign chairman John Fernan announced this morning that the drive has raised $20,485.30, three percent over the $19,900 goal as final totals loom. Mrs. John Cara Dine praised volunteers from residential and corporate teams and noted broad participation, with pacesetters and fair share donors driving the stretch.

Library at Brodhead To Hold Open House

The Brodhead High School library invites the public to tour the facility from 4 to 5 30 p.m. on Monday November 1. Books from 52 leading publishers will be on display. Librarian Mrs Joyce Condon notes the service is in its 14th year and well praised by librarians and teachers. A lunch will be served.

Edward Fairchild Dies at 93 in Madison

Edward T. Fairchild former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice died at his Madison home at age 93. He served on the state high court and was widely regarded for his long public career and contributions to the judiciary.
