Four year term bill seeks more civilian control of Joint Chiefs
The House Armed Services Committee backed a bill to grant four year terms to all Joint Chiefs of Staff members, challenging civilian oversight. The vote came despite Kennedy administration opposition and concerns over tying the president’s hands, with witnesses from former chiefs warning of a "sword of Damocles" over reappointment uncertainty. The panel’s action precedes broader clashes over racial discrimination directives at bases.
