Five deaths in separate accidents raise 1963 Wisconsin toll to 693. Emerson Nichols, 46, of Ridgeway, died in a two car collision on Highway 14 near Arena. Three members of a Villa Park family, and Theresa Chruscielski, injured. Weisgerberger, Albrecht, Nauyok, and McCarville also died in crashes across Wisconsin. McCarville died in Madison hospital from injuries from an Oct 1 crash on Highway 14 near Spring Green.

Hartford police said a Kraft Cheese Co processing plant blast Friday night killed David Richard, 40, of Hartford when a flywheel broke loose and struck an ammonia tank. Twenty nine workers escaped injury. Six firefighters inhaled ammonia fumes but were treated and released.

Walnut Logs Fed To Local Furniture Trade From Monroe Rail Siding
The Illinois Central siding near Monroe is the hub for a large log harvest. Bruggeman and Dubuque logging crews have hauled around 30 train carloads of oak and walnut this season, with logs trucked to Monroe and then loaded onto rail cars. Logs average 12 by 18 inches and shipments to Dubuque exceed 540 tons. Logs will be used for furniture or veneer, with bass wood and maples also bought. Bruggeman’s team has worked the Monroe area for 15 years, starting harvest Sept. 3 this year.
