Lions mark 25th anniversary with honors in Monroe

The Monroe Lions Club observed its 25th anniversary at Idle Hour Mansion with charter members praised for perfect attendance over 23 years. Ten and 15 year chevrons were awarded as officers and guests highlighted Leader Dog and Eye Bank programs and the need for continued support for visually handicapped efforts.

Nobel Prizes Awarded to Three Americans in 1976

Three Americans win Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry. Burton Richter of Stanford and Samuel C. Ting of MIT share the physics award for discovering a heavy elementary particle. William N. Lipscomb of Harvard wins chemistry for borane structure studies. Prize is $160,000 each. ceremony December 10 in Stockholm.

Monore Evening Times adopts new central phone number

United Telephone Co will install a new phone system in Monroe Evening Times. Beginning Wednesday morning callers should dial 328-5101 for all departments as the prefix changes. The FL-1 system aims to improve customer service and efficiency.

Carter and Ford Slow Campaign Pace Ahead of Debate

Democratic rival Jimmy Carter says he will bend over backwards to avoid gutter tactics as he and President Ford enter the final two weeks of the White House contest. Both candidates ease tempo ahead of Friday’s third debate and a blitz through up to 14 states before the November 2 election. Carter rests with family in Plains after church and plans a Tampa Miami Winston-Salem New York swing, while Ford stays in Washington then attends the Al Smith dinner before a face to face in Williamsburg. Independent Eugene McCarthy complains his bid gets little attention while urging cuts in defense and focus on unemployment and health care costs.

MAAC Heritage Homes Tour a Successful Community Event

The Monroe Arts and Activities Center Historic Tour of Homes drew strong attendance and achieved its goals helped by owners Nathan and Ellen Bear EC and Grace Hamilton Robert and Nancy Klink Richard and Lavonne Trainor and William and Royletta Moon. Fifty four people supported the organization with others donating food and flowers. Attendees enjoyed refreshments and music from the Young Artist's Program. Guests came from Goldau Switzerland and multiple Illinois and Wisconsin communities. The financial results will be released once tallied and the MAAC's next event features the UW Platteville Chorus on Wednesday November 3 at 8 p.m.

County 4-H Marks Revival With Awards Banquet

Judy Witt reports a Saturday achievement program in Monticello School gym drew at least 450 4-H members families and supporters, ending seven-year gap with a county wide event. Joann Rufener and Barbara Hartwig named Wisconsin delegates to National Club Congress in Chicago.
