Leaders kindle the 4-H flame at Green County banquet

Mrs. Charles Hartwig urged keeping 4-H flame alive after attending the National 4-H Leader's Forum. New 1976-77 adult leaders were installed, including Werner Vogel as vice president and Jane Swiggum as secretary treasurer. 185 attended the Dutch's Swiss Wheel Inn dinner as long-time leaders were honored and a $300 donation was noted.

Principal offers paddling or cigarettes to teens in reform effort

In HOME Missouri three teens caught with cigarettes faced a choice from their principal eat the cigarettes or be paddled. Two chose to swallow 18 cigarettes and now face health issues as their mothers protest at a school board meeting. The board upheld the principal’s action.

Economic growth slows as jobless rolls rise

The Commerce Department reports the nations economy grew at 4 percent annual rate in the third quarter, down from 4.5 percent in the second quarter and 9.2 percent in the first quarter. Inflation in GNP rose 4.4 percent in the third quarter, easing from 5.2 percent in the prior period.

GNP growth slows in third quarter amid inventory lag

U S GNP rose at an annual 4 percent in the third quarter with inventories adding 14.4 billion and total investment up 5 percent. The advance follows 11.5 percent spring growth and marks the smallest pace since late 1975, ahead of the November election.
