Columbus fortunes fade as the city faces economic strain and population loss. The second part of a birthday collection discusses local resilience, business setbacks, and hopeful measures shaping Columbus's future.
On October 11 1492 Columbus and crew reached a Bahamas island later named San Salvador. They raised the Spanish flag, claimed land for Spain, and began exploring as ships pressed toward Hispaniola. The Santa Maria sank near Hispaniola while Nina and Pinta prepared to sail home.
Berber tribesmen fell back into the Kabylie Mountains before stronger government forces and pledged to continue a guerrilla war. Government troops advanced using tanks, bazookas, and recoilless rifles, breaking a Berber roadblock at Fort National and capturing Michelet and two nearby towns.

Elmer Kaster 77 a former Monroe resident died at 3 27 am today in his Freeport home. Survived by wife Margaret three daughters Mrs George Krauss Monroe Mrs Otto Leu Darlington Mrs Robert Stevens Bedford Ind a son Cecil Oregon Ill two sisters and a brother. Services set for 1 30 pm Monday at Walker mortuary Freeport.

Assembly Speaker Robert Haase of Manitette will stay in the race for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor next year despite incumbent Jack Olson’s plans. Olson withdrew from the governor race but did not say if he will seek re election as lieutenant governor, stating he withdrew for party unity. Others weighing runs include former Gov. Walther Kohler, former Lt. Gov. Knowles, Sen. Proxmire’s opponent, and Wilbur Renk. Haase seeks endorsement at the state Republican convention and believes his bid strengthens the ticket geographically.
The Second District GOP event at Ft. Atkinson drew 400 attendees with Lt. Gov. Jack Olson and former Lt. Gov. Warren Knowles receiving standing ovations. Knowles praised Olson’s withdrawal from the 1964 gubernatorial race as a sportsmanlike move shaping party unity.
Aven C. Johnson, 79, of Brodhead died last night at 11 20 in his home after a two week illness. He was born October 27 1883 in Illinois, married Gertrude Hoss in Janesville on December 25 1916, and was a retired machinist. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, four sons, twenty seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, plus a sister and three brothers. Services 1 30 p m Tuesday at Everson funeral home, Rev Lowell Mays officiating. Burial Greenwood cemetery. Friends may call Monday evening.
The Green County Medical Society reports Sabin oral vaccine clinics set for Friday November 1 in Monroe Brodhead Monticello New Glarus and Albany with follow ups December 13 and January 24. Clinics run 3 to 8 p m except Albany 3 to 6 p m. The vaccine is free with a voluntary 25 cent contribution.
Becky Trumpy is named general chairman of Monroe high school's 1963 Homecoming. Events begin with a Thursday bonfire at 7 30 p.m. south of the high school, a Friday parade at 3 15 p.m., and a 7 45 p.m. homecoming game at Recreation Park versus Middleton followed by a Saturday dance from 8 to 11 30 p.m. in the M room.

A U S Army convoy of 18 vehicles and 61 men, delayed over two days at Babelsberg, passed into West Berlin after protests from U S officials and a standoff with Soviet guards. The dispute centered on whether dismounting was required for small convoys.
William H. Burhop chairman of Employers Mutuals of Wausau died in a local hospital after a 10 day illness. He served as president from 1952 to 1960 before becoming board chairman. He was a former president of the Wisconsin State Chamber of Commerce and of several national mutual insurance organizations.
