The narrative recounts Christopher Columbus born in Genoa about 1436, his early seafaring, and attempts to win royal support. After earlier failures with John II of Portugal, he seeks Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain who, amid war with the Moors, delay and eventually reject his plan for three ships and governance of new lands. Louis de Santangel is mentioned as a pivotal adviser in the stalled negotiation.
Former Vice President Nixon criticizes President Kennedy's wheat sale to Russia as a major foreign policy mistake. In a Thursday ABC TV interview he claims the deal will cost American taxpayers about 100 million dollars and subsidizes Khrushchev during Russia's economic troubles.

A 14 year old boy witnessed a man steal from an unlocked rear safe at Bauman Ace Hardware, southeast corner of the square. The thief, described as tall slender 30 to 35 in a dark brown suit, placed a brown envelope in his pocket after taking at least 300.24 dollars. Monroe police and deputies investigated while several leads were checked and the amount confirmed.
New York markets closed the week on a strong note with volume around 4.8 million shares. IBM jumped over five points after reporting a large third quarter earnings and sales rise while Raytheon attracted investor interest reclaiming an early loss to move higher.
Firemen and policemen with a trench digging machine rescued 20 month old Christopher Tepp from an eight foot hole Thursday. He was unhurt.
A smoky fire damaged the Wagner building in Orangeville causing losses over 25 thousand dollars. Three fire departments fought the blaze with 12 residents evacuated from the second floor. One resident, Jess Coomber, was rescued from a second story window but not injured. Fire officials traced the blaze to an oil furnace in the basement beneath the Don Gapen Associates office. The building housed Marvin Shippy’s tavern Don Woehrich’s TV shop and Dr Vernon Best’s upstairs office along with four families on the second floor. The incident prompted assistance from Monroe firemen as crews stayed on site into the evening.
Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Jack Olson quit the GOP gubernatorial contest to back former Lt. Gov. Warren Knowles and back party unity. Olson cited avoiding a Democrat-advantaging fight, with Knowles expressing appreciation for the move and observers predicting Olson may run again for lieutenant governor.

In Belluno Italy volunteers and 10 000 workers dug mass graves as authorities battle disease risk after a mountain landslide flooded the Piave valley from the Vaiont dam. Officials estimated up to 3000 dead with 600 bodies recovered, as 1500 residents of Longerone were feared buried.
Monroe remains under study as a potential site for a future two year college campus or extension center. The UW news department told The Monroe Evening Times after a subcommittee report omitted Monroe. The plan calls for ongoing long range study of Monroe Medford area options with approval dependent on legislature.
The Senate passed a two price dairy bill aimed at reducing a near one billion pound surplus. Sponsor Sen. Court of Honor includes Audrey Beach Barbara Kundert and Lynn Norton all seniors. Homecoming events span bonfire parade football game and dance.
Former Wisconsin Governor Walter J. Kohler Jr. said he might seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 1964. He stressed party unity and noted he will back another candidate if one is available, having lost a 1957 special election to William Proxmire. He previously served three terms as governor before that defeat.
The Monroe Edgerton freshman football game at Recreation Park was canceled and set for Thursday October 24. Tonight the Cheesemakers varsity travel to Jefferson for a 7 45 kickoff in homecoming action as they aim to climb above .500 in conference play.
President Kennedy called top advisers to discuss the Soviet blockade of a Berlin bound U S convoy. Secretary Rusk protested the action while Anatoly Dobrynin was summoned. The 18 vehicle 61 man convoy was halted at the West German checkpoint and later again near Berlin amid heavy Soviet troops.
