Nancy Hartwig Named Green County Farm Bureau Queen 1970

Nancy Hartwig daughter of Mr and Mrs Byron Hartwig Route 1 was announced as the Green County Farm Bureau queen for 1970 during the Cooperative meeting at Monroe High School. Also introduced were queen Darlene Rufener and retiring Miss Green County Farm Bureau Georgia Wegmueller with leaders noting partnership in agriculture and county demonstrations. Directors elected for 1970 include John Meichtry Roy Block Robert Stauffer Ernest Gempler and Lawrence Dunphy.

Accidents Reported Across Monroe Area One Day

Three accidents were recorded in Monroe area on Tuesday. Alvin J. Goepfert’s parked car was hit by William P. Lunda’s vehicle, causing moderate damage. Earlier, Herbert T. Kness backed into Alvin F. Pape’s parked car, with minor property damage reported. Duane E. Huilbregtse’s northbound car collided with Clarence C. Goecks’s vehicle six miles north of Monroe, severely damaging both cars.

Federal court orders Groppi release review in Wisconsin

A Dane County court directed Sheriff Vernon L. to show cause by Friday why Rev. James E Groppi should not be released from jail pending a habeas corpus petition. Groppi, a Milwaukee civil rights leader, was jailed under an 1848 contempt law without bail after a sit in protesting welfare budget cuts in the Wisconsin Assembly.

Monroe High Names Homecoming Queen Vicki Hughes

Vicki Hughes daughter of Ray Hughes has been chosen as Monroe High School Homecoming Queen by the football squad. She will reign during half time of the Homecoming game versus Stoughton on Friday Oct 18, with the dance on Saturday Oct 19. Her court includes Mary Siedschlag and Jeri Schuepp. The dance theme is Age of Aquarius in the M Room with Pat Elmer directing decorations.

Annexation Hearings Set for Clarno and Monroe Areas

Public hearings on November 4 will consider Grace Painter et al petitions to annex 46 acres in Clarno to Monroe and Melchior Denny petition to annex 311 acres in Monroe. City council also approved a hangar project with the Airport Development Corp for eight airplanes, funded by a ten year loan, with hangars reverting to the city. Howard Olsen is president and Joseph Viney is secretary. Larry Lindgren attended in PR capacity.

Voegeli Farm Wins Big at World Dairy Expo Brown Swiss Show

Voegeli Farm of Monticello took top honors with the senior and grand champion female VB Czarina Rosette Lee in the Brown Swiss Show at the World Dairy Expo at Dane County Fairgrounds. The six day event closes today with Homemaker Day and a Country-Western Spectacular. Free shows ran daily at Memorial Coliseum as dairy cattle across the expo reached an estimated value of three million dollars. In nearby State Tractor Pull results Alfred Haugen of Brodhead led 5 000 pound class with 162 ft 2 in, Harold Haugen topped 10 000 pounds with 173 ft 3 1 2 in, and Jim Luedtke of Hartford youngest entrant won 7 500 pounds. Stacey Williams of Monroe posted 160 ft 2 in for third in a field that included many Wisconsin and Minnesota entries. Gordon Ludwig of Monroe placed fifth in the Midwest FFA Invitational Daily Judging Contest as 55 teams competed with Wisconsin grabbing four of five top individual honors and Minnesota taking first and second in team events.

Welfare protestors press Wisconsin Assembly over budget cuts

About 20 welfare group representatives addressed a packed Madison Assembly in a rare session to present their case on funding cuts. Leader Rev James E Groppi was absent from Dane County jail on contempt charges after leading 2000 demonstrators in a chamber occupation.

Mary Zettle Waiting for 94th Birthday at Monroe Manor

Mrs. Mary Zettle, 93 turning 94, of Monroe Manor Nursing Home, celebrated in October. Formerly Mary Ackerman, she is the sole surviving Ackerman sister and widow of Jerry Zettle, who farmed in Cadiz Township. She plans to attend her grandchild Ivan Zettle’s wedding to Anna Woethrich on October 11 at St. John's Church. She has two living children, Pearl Zettle and Charles Zettle, with many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and recently spent time at St. Clare Hospital.
