Farm leaders pledge bipartisan effort on new program

Secretary Clifford Hardin and Rep. W R Poage joked about party labels at the World Dairy Expo in Madison while promising a farm plan within 60 days. Poage called Hardin a wicked Republican as they urged a bipartisan approach to farm issues before 2,060 attendees. Truman Torgerson of Manitowoc received man of the year honors.

Scenic Charter Flights From Air Taxi Service Begin Oct 6

Bob Hahlen, manager and pilot of Air Taxi Service, offers three scenic trips starting October 6 for about two weeks weather permitting. Routes include the Mississippi Valley, Wisconsin River Valley and part of the Lake Michigan Shore Area with a dinner stop at Truax Air Field on the return leg.

Thill Case Ends With Prison Sentences For Slaying

Two East Dubuque men pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the 1967 death of Hilbert Thill Jr. They received prison terms of three to 15 years and three to five years respectively. A third man, Paul Duffy, 22, faces aggravated battery charges.

Welfare protests loom as budget plan seems doomed

In Madison protesters clashed with police after lawmakers tabled a $33 million welfare package amid days of demonstrations. Gov Knowles called a special session but the Assembly stalled, guarding the plan’s fate as guards patrolled the Capitol and arrests rose. Lindgren Leaves Monroe Paper to Start PR Firm

Larry R. Lindgren exits his post as editor of the Monroe Evening Times to launch an independent public relations and publicity firm in Monroe. He will operate from the Germann Fuel Co. Building and serve clients with PR publicity promotions and commercial photography while staying connected with local media. He has long been active in community groups and politics in Green County and is a Baraboo native with two children.

Man Killed by Stray Bullet in Police Raid Mistake

In Whittier California Hayward Henry Dyer 22 was killed when a stray rifle bullet from a predawn raid pierced the ceiling of his mother in law's apartment where he stood cradling his infant. The shot fired accidentally by Vernon Dectective Sgt Frank Sweeney as officers searched the wrong unit followed chaos during the raid. No arrests were made in the upstairs apartment though one man faced investigation on possession of marijuana and dangerous drugs.

Ollie Fink Named New Editor of Times

Ollie Fink, previously assistant editor, is named managing editor of the Times and will assume duties Monday. A Monroe recruit since 1964, he rose from general reporter to farm editor and photo editor, earning awards for agricultural writing. He is a Missouri journalism graduate and serves in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. He and his wife Nancy have two children.
