Substitute Is Given for Tax Plan by Group

MADISON AP The Assembly Republican Caucus committee studying urban has recommended a 4.97 million package including a municipal income surtax as a substitute for Gov Warren P Knowles urban aids bills. The Milwaukee schools language skills and teacher aids programs get 4.1 million. Other funds include 250000 for Aid to Families with Dependent Children for special needs. The surtax would go to the state and be returned to municipalities without a city by city limit. The plan also proposes altering piggy back sales tax to return money to counties or municipalities.

Argyle Car Club To Be Organized

Red Cross Disaster Nursing Workshop Planned

The Green County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a disaster nursing workshop for nurses at the Court House Circuit Court Room on Tuesday October 7 from 9 am to 3 pm. Specialty Co Starts Building New Monroe Facility

Ground was begun for a new building to which Monroe Specialty Company Inc will be moved upon completion in December. John W. MacInnis president said the building is being constructed by Robert Penniston Monroe just east of the city on Highway 1181. The business now operates at 1204 162 St Monroe Specialty Company Inc manufactures metal identification tags.

Sex Education Topic Set for Monroe Church Discussion

Wisconsin Assembly backs contempt ruling over Groppi protest

Attorney General Robert Warren told Judge James E. Doyle that the Assembly has inherent power to preserve itself, arguing Groppi’s jail for contempt followed a massive sit-in. Groppi’s lawyers argued the 1848 law and trial rights were violated, seeking restraining order. The judge planned to rule by Monday.

Playtime expanded preschool program opens Monday registrations

The Park and Recreation Department expands the Playtime preschool program to three mornings a week for four and five year olds. Registration runs next week at City Hall Park and Recreation office from 8 to 5 daily, with a 25 child cap per session. Sessions run October through February on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 at the Community Center in City Hall. Three year olds may register only if spaces remain. No charge.

Hoffa parole bid denied as Parole Board sets March review

AP reports James R. Hoffa, former top union leader, will remain in federal prison at least another year and a half after the U S Parole Board rejected his request for early release. Students Remain In Protest State Capitol Torchlight Parade Fizzles

MADISON AP Students continued protests at the Capitol though Rev James E Groppi was jailed and a planned torchlight parade barely sparked. Demonstrators planned a Tent City on the Capitol lawn while guards surrounded the area. Gov Knowles issued an order barring the tent protest and police cleared the lawns. One woman, Mrs Krean Kambitsis 25 Madison welfare mother, was arrested briefly before leaving.

Moon Rocks at UW Madison Exhibit Opens Today

Apollo 11 lunar samples arrive at the University of Wisconsin for study by chemist Lawrence Haskin and geologist Eugene Cameron. Over 140 NASA scientists will examine the rocks and soil in a public showing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the new chemistry building.
