The Associated Press counts 602 traffic deaths over a 102 hour Thanksgiving period, the highest tally in eight years. States reported 39 in California and 36 in Texas, with Ohio at 33.
David Allen of Browntown placed third in the junior carcass lamb judging at the International Livestock Show in Chicago. His lamb weighed 52 pounds with .35 fat and 2.85 square inches loin eye, ranking in the top five for lin eye. He also took third in open show among 57 animals, with a 42 pound lamb, .22 fat, and 2.27 square inches loin eye. Richard Sullivan led the heavyweight junior Hampshire carcass, second place at 61 pounds with .23 fat and 2.53 loin eye. Barbara Williams and Mary Graber, among others, also competed in various classes.
Madison prosecutors seek a court ruling to clarify a recent decision that limited their authority to issue warrants. The petition asks the Wisconsin Supreme Court to exercise original jurisdiction in the case.
At a ceremony in Monroe the First Unitarian Universalist Church building was gifted to the city to operate as a historical museum with plans for a lease to be drawn by the Green County Historical Society. Mayor Ekum and Oscar N Johnson accepted the gift and spoke of long term community benefits.
The Women’s Club of Monroe runs two Christmas Stocking projects through December 15. The Clothes Closet opens to stocking families on three Wednesdays to prepare for the season, then returns to normal on December 22. Emergency clothing aid is available month long via co chairs. Warm children’s clothing and bedding are urgently needed, as are large repaired toys by December 1.

Madison Wisconsin cheese market reports a one cent gain with demand fair to good and tight to adequate supplies. Cheddars quoted 40.38 to 42.34 per hundredweight, 40 pound blocks 40.3 to 42.34, single daisies 43 percent, longhorns 43 percent, and midgets 44 to 46 percent.
Two cars were heavily damaged in a collision southwest of Brodhead at Highway 1181 and County Trunk G. Gary Hartwig 20 Monroe reportedly had minor injuries while Charlotte Stuessy Brodhead drove north in the other car.
Santa brings a cold snap but offers holiday cheer as Christmas Dollar Days runs Thursday through Saturday in Monroe. Greater Monroe Community Merchants sponsors a city wide sale with most stores open until 9 p m except Saturday. Shopping ends 5 p m on Friday December 24 to let staff enjoy Christmas Eve with families. Santa hosts open house in a mobile home near the Court House with Saturday afternoons and evenings aligned to store hours.
An 18 year old from South Beloit died in a Sunday morning crash near Freeport when the car left Illinois 75 and struck a utility pole east of Freeport. Willie Perry was identified as the victim. Six others were injured.
Market advances in heavy afternoon trading led by gains in defense electronics and airlines.
Wisconsin reports 11 holiday traffic fatalities over a 102 hour weekend, raising the year toll to 922. Among the dead are David Larson, 26, of Stoughton, killed when a car door pinned him after he stepped out. Robert Ripp, 16, of Evansville, in a rollover. Albert Pevan, 80, near Cadott. and Hughie Lea, 35, near McFarland. Other victims include Garry Hickie, 30. Steven Rehrend, 18. Benjamin Jones, 46. James Olson, 81. and Ruth Fuller, 37 plus her mother, 72, of Burlington. The Fullers died near Kenosha after Thanksgiving dinner, leaving eight children orphaned.
Robert Ripp 16 son of Virgil and Mrs Ripp of Evansville died at Madison hospital from injuries suffered in a Saturday night one car crash on Highway 14 two miles south of Evansville. Harve Anderson 18 the driver and two other passengers were injured. Robert was born in Stoughton and moved to Evansville a decade ago. He attended Evansville High School and helped on the family farm. He leaves six brothers, four sisters, a step brother and extended relatives. Funeral arrangements are at Roderick Ward Funeral Home.
Governor Knowles says additional state legislation is needed to start the federal Medicare program in Wisconsin. He warns costs will be about 29 million dollars yearly, matched by federal funds, and counties or state financing decisions remain undecided. The program begins July 1 and the legislature reconvenes May 2.
In Waterloo Wisconsin a 14 year old boy Ronald died after a faulty gas space heater operation in a farm home. His 16 year old brother Wesley and 13 year old sister Caroline were overcome but revived at St Marys Hospital in Columbus and reported in good condition. The father had slept through the night, and coroner Ewald Reichert labeled the tragedy a result of heater malfunction.
