Glen Kortman of Monroe led brick cheese with 96.50 at the 78th Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association meeting in Fond du Lac. Other top scores included Richard Kundert and Albert Deppeler in Muenster and limburger, while John Marty and Leo Wills led Swiss divisions. A state cheese marketing order proposal won unanimous support, promising over $800 000 annually pending final farmer backing and factory approvals.

Ninety four year old N Roy Bowman of Albany will be featured guest at the Swiss Night at Turner Hall on Saturday night November 8. The Monroe Swiss Singers and Monroe Turners sponsor the program with an 8 p.m. start for Swiss entertainment, dance and a Swiss style lunch. Bowman previously entertained with impersonations and dialects, and remains active in barbering. The program features Monroe Swiss Singers New Glarus Swiss Folk Dancers The Lehner Children and other groups including New Glarus Maen Nerchor and a Barbershop Quartet. Special numbers include yodeling and alphorn performances leading to a finale of group singing.
A Janesville couple, Robert Newfield and Virginia Freeman, both 40s and based in Janesville, were killed when their single engine Cessna 182 crashed on Milwaukee Road tracks near Highway 19 in Watertown striking 26 000 volt wires. Witnesses reported a terrific explosion and scattered wreckage while investigators noted no engine noise before the crash.
