New GOP governors gain tally to 32 with Linwood winning Virginia and Cahill securing New Jersey. President Nixon backed the winners as Lindsay secures a re election in New York, uniting liberal rivals and independents behind his victory.
Cleveland Mayor Carl B. Stokes wins reelection, defeating Republican challenger Ralph J. Perk. Stokes becomes the first black mayor of a major US city to secure a second term.
Wayne County Sheriff Roman Gribbs won the Detroit mayoral race defeating county auditor Richard Austin in a nonpartisan election. Austin is identified as Negro in the report.
Senior members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, unhappy with President Nixon's Monday address on Vietnam, have cleared the way for a fresh set of hearings on the war issue.
In the Central Highlands a ten hour fighting flare left South Vietnamese forces with their heaviest four month losses while they claim they killed three times as many North Vietnamese with American aid. Separately a man says his Air Force job loss is retaliation for testimony about cost estimates for the CSA super transport plane.
Senator William Froxmire secured a plan in Washington amid ongoing discussions. The AP report notes Froxmire’s maneuvering within Senate channels as he advances a policy initiative, with details still developing and core backers and opponents not yet fully identified.

AP reports three paintings valued at over 1.5 million dollars stolen from Pope Paul’s apartment in Rome. Wisconsin Democrats gain seat as Dale McKenna wins Jefferson district in a special election. Madison Assembly rejects Dirksen amendment proposal for a constitutional convention call.
Mrs. Russell Gethen, aided by four girls, makes bow and four-in-hand neckties from pheasant feathers and hats, hat bands, collars, and ornaments. Her work includes egg based Christmas ornaments and hats in a Chicago display. Ties retail for five dollars and twelve fifty, with over two thousand ties produced. Miss Judith Dodge is linked to Broadbent and Bingham Louisville order house.
The Monroe City Council annexed forty acres in Clarno on Grace Painter’s petition, to Ward 5, zoned light industry for a mobile home park. Another thirty-one acres north of the city owned by Melchior Denny was added to Ward 1, zoned temporarily as residential for housing construction. A public hearing occurred with no objections. The council extended a tavern dancing ordinance hearing to the next meeting. It adopted 3 percent interest on special assessments and authorized CD street equipment purchases. It granted licenses to Barbara Snyder, Dale F Alexander, and Lester M Johnson. It approved street light installation, vendor payments for stump removal, incinerator work, and crushed rock, and matched $16,000 with the County for roadway work. It favored curb and gutter assessments and 10 cents per hour meter hood fees. An ordinance for first reading allowed street construction to ease parking at St Clare Hospital.
Franklin Wayne Pickett aged 54 of 2311 18th Ave Monroe died suddenly at 5 p m Tuesday November 4 at his home after heart complications. Born September 24 1915 in Monroe he was married October 25 1940 to Gertrude Benkert at St John s United Church of Christ. He leaves widow Gertrude a son Daniel Monroe and daughter Merrilee who is attending Turn to No 2 Back Page.
Albany Times Special reports the 1970 village budget will be adopted at the December meeting with the finance committee to hold its first initial meeting on Monday November 10 at 7 p.m. Departments must submit monetary needs. rules for landfill area and fuel-bill openings also on the agenda.
At nearly 90 Mrs H A Erickson of Albany remains keenly interested in people and welfare. Despite failing eyesight she writes to shut ins and friends, listens to sermons on the radio, and stays active with housework and viewing world events. Her daughter Mrs Genevieve Reinitz, a retired teacher, now shares her Albany home, as the family remains closely involved in church and social activities. Born Iva Ruhberg in Windom Minnesota in 1879, she married Rev Erickson in 1901 and has lived in Albany since 1924 with three daughters, multiple grandchildren, and several great grandchildren in the Madison area and beyond.
On Monday November 10 a new one hour early childhood program titled Sesame Street debuts for ages three to five. It airs twice daily on WHA TV Channel 21 Madison at 11 am and 4 pm Monday through Friday. The series covers numbers letters and activities and is produced by the Children's Television Workshop under a federal grant. A free program guide will be mailed to interested residents upon request to WHA TV. NBC will air a preview special on Saturday November 8 at 9 pm.
Alpha-Omega Players present The World of Carl Sandburg on Wednesday November 2 at Grace Lutheran Church. The program profiles the life and work of Carl Sandburg through songs scenes and readings reflecting his varied early work and two Pulitzer Prize wins. The production features Phil Packer Carolyn Frost Rosalyne Meyer and Bob Johnson as part of a Dallas based troupe touring nationwide for this fully staged evening with a free will offering.
