Memorial Day Traffic Mishaps Reported in Monroe Area

Sheriff records list five Memorial Day crashes including a Route 3 Monroe injury near a farm fence and an electrical line, a Route 1 crash near Clarno, two May 29 incidents near Sky-Vu and 17th Street, plus a May 31 rear end collision near County Trunk N. Red warning lights mounted on Monroe firemen vehicles

Memorial Day Tribute Draws Hundreds at Greenwood Cemetery

Memorial Day eve service drew over 500 attendees as Rev. Wolfgang Koehler delivered a solemn tribute to war dead. Parade spectators saluted the flag while Robert H. Hendrickson read the extensive honor roll of the dead since May 30, 1968, naming dozens of veterans.

Monroe graduates to wed and graduate from Naval Academy

David G. Deininger and Leon A. Wittwer complete studies at major U S academies. Deininger earns a literature degree with honors in a class of 871 and will be commissioned as an ensign in the Navy. He will wed Mary Nussbaum at Annapolis the same evening. He wins five prizes including the Van Dyke Prize and a $250 bond. Wittwer graduates from the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Both stories mark milestone academic honors for Monroe area families.

Henry Baebler Stricken at 69 Monticello Obituary

Henry V Baebler 79 died at his home May 30 twenty minutes after returning from St. Clare Hospital following surgery. He owned Monticello Florist with his wife and farmed earlier. Surviving include his widow a daughter a brother and a sister and two grandchildren. Funeral at Zwingli United Church of Christ, Masonic rites Monday night.

Cool It With Books Summer Reading Club Plans

Arabat Ludlow Memorial Library announces a summer children’s reading club for grades 2 through 6 running June 4 to July 31. Members receive a name card and a booklet to log books read, with a reading achievement certificate for 25+ books. In Madison about 2,500 protesters joined Memorial Day ceremonies after the main events ended. Patrick Quinn spoke through a bullhorn and urged ending the war, while about 1,000 spectators remained for the protest. No incidents were reported.

2 000 Dinners Served by Jaycees on Memorial Day

The Jaycees served more than 2,000 chicken dinners to area residents during the Memorial Day barbecue. A joint Jaycees and Jaycettes picnic followed at the Fairgrounds with free antique fire truck rides for Monroe children. The fire truck siren was blown several times during the afternoon.

Lentners Hurt In Dane Mishap

Mrs Cleyance Lentner of Belleville received treatment at Madison General Hospital after a two car crash on Verona Road near Madison. Her husband and daughter Jane 18 were also treated and released. Charles Matthews 73 of Platteville was in serious condition with head and possible internal injuries.
