Monthly Tests for Sirens Begin June 7 in Southwest Area

Civil defense outdoor warning sirens in 11 counties including Columbus Crawford Dane Grant Green Iowa Sauk and Vernon will be tested at noon on the first Wednesday each month. Tests standardize time and day to help the public distinguish tests from actual emergencies and ensure devices operate properly.

Brush Brothers Fun Day Planned in Anunville

Or angeville's Brush brothers host a public free event on Sunday June 11 at the high school athletic field. Activities include a horse show greased pigs a greased pole with cash prize a pie eating contest and games for all ages. James Brockman, 80, famed songwriter for motion pictures, died May 22 in Santa Monica California. His hits included I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles Down Among the Sheltering Palms and Let's Grow Old Together.

Memorial Barbecue Boosts Monroe Jaycees Event

Monroe Jaycees reported a record Memorial Day barbecue at Green County Fairground. About 1,600 half chickens were prepared and served, with 700 chickens gone by 10 am as volunteers faced long lines and high demand. Ten gallons of oil, 50 pounds of butter, 5 pounds spice, 2,400 rolls and 750 pounds of coleslaw were used.

Memorial Day Traffic Toll Reaches 601 Lives

Nationwide Memorial Day weekend traffic fatalities hit a record 601, up from 560 in a nonholiday period two weeks earlier. The 102 hour four day period ended Tuesday midnight, the highest for the holiday but below earlier estimates and past four day counts. The 1966 three day holiday recorded 542 deaths, and 1963 four day observance totaled 525.

Memorial Holiday Traffic Deaths Claim Philip Everson

A Lafayette County crash near Wiota killed 25 year old Philip Everson of Argyle as the long Memorial holiday ended. Coroner Dr. Lyle Olson listed death at midnight with a 9:20 watch stop, no belt use evident, car left embankment and hit a tree. Erickson Funeral Home handles arrangements.

Private Rites Planned for Actor Claude Rains Dead at 77

Claude Rains star of Casablanca and Notorious Deception died at 77 in Lakes Region Hospital after a lingering illness. The London born actor began on stage at 11 and built a 25 year film career with roles from Louie in Casablanca to villains and lovers across over 30 films. He served in the London Scottish Regiment in World War I and later lived on a farm in Pennsylvania and Sandwich New Hampshire. Private services are planned.

Church Building Plan Noted Here Monroe Plans New Christian Scientists Church

Plans to erect a Christian Scientists church in Monroe were announced by the board. The new building will replace the existing church at 1411 10th St on the same lot, with demolition underway and completion expected by September. During construction services and Sunday School will be at the Masonic Temple 1613 10th St on the ground floor. Regular services are 10 45 a m Sunday and 9 30 a m Sunday School. Wednesday 7 45 p m testimony meeting. Reading Room temporarily at 911 19th Ave Wednesdays and Saturdays 2 to 4.

Spray Painting Prank Reported in Monroe

Monroe police logged five complaints of spray paint on four cars and a house since 10:38 a.m. yesterday. The spraying occurred west of the square in the residential area as investigators pursue leads.
