Monroe Dairy Queen nominees named for contest

Monroe announces ten junior girls from Monroe High School as nominees for dairy queen with 104 eligible candidates and three weeks of voting to June 12. Top three will be interviewed to select the community dairy queen for county competition.

Private Rites for Goetz Pioneer of Monroe Theater

Chester J. Goetz 74 of 1919 Lincoln Road Monroe died May 27 at Monroe Manor Nursing Home after a fall at Goetz Theatre. Pioneer in motion picture theater operations from the Dakotas to Monroe, he helped establish Goetz enterprises and the Sky-Vu Drive-In. Survived by widow Alice Howard and two sons Monroe businessmen Nathan and Robert, private services set for May 29 at Newcomer Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Eye Bank Approved at Monroe Lions Club Meeting

Lion members in Marco’s Supper Club heard Dr. Robert Smith announce approval to set up an Eye Bank in Monroe. The club donated 500 to the Lions Foundation and reported proceeds of 4,272.25 from the Minstrel Show, with 1,739.73 to City Band and Lions Club each, and 750 from the Light Bulb Sale toward a 1,500 target. New officers will take duties in July. June picnic set for June 23 on local back lawns.

Memorial Day Observances Planned in Monroe

Memorial Day events in Monroe include a 9:30 a.m. ceremony at Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Koehler, a parade starting at 9 a.m. from Lincoln School, and graves decoration from 7:15 a.m. Units such as Legionnaires VFW Auxiliary Girl Scouts Boy Scouts and Brownies will participate. The Monroe High School Band performs from 9 to 9 30 a.m. A firing squad from the 1158th Transportation Company will also take part.

Memorial Day Garbage Collection Change Announced

The superintendent announced no garbage collection Friday for Memorial Day. Residents with Friday pickup should bag waste and store it until Tuesday, June 3, and extra garbage ties are available on the truck.

Return to India shaped by Hindu studies for Mrs. Sutter

Barbie Kundert Sutter, a 1964 Monroe High School graduate, spent 20 months in India as part of the College Year in India program. She studied at Banaras Hindu University and with Swamiji in Ganjam, detailing daily routines from 4:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and experiences with teachings on Christlike living.

Collins Named General Campaign Chairman for 1969 United Fund

Robert A. Collins was chosen as General Campaign Chairman for the 1969 United Fund Drive. Three new agencies The Heart Fund The Arthritis Foundation and the Methodist's Children's Service were approved for inclusion. The 1969 budget was set at 30485 with modest increases for select agencies.
