Fernan Schoenike Win Top Jaycee Honor at State Convention

At the State Jaycee Convention in Green Bay John Fernan and Paul Schoenike earned top honors. Fernan received the Badger Mr. Jaycee Award for embodying the Jaycee creed, while Schoenike won the speaking contest and a chance to represent Wisconsin at the National Contest in Louisville, Ky., June 26-28.

Early Church Notes Due With Memorial Day On Friday

Ministers who normally send church notices for Friday Church Page should submit items by Wednesday noon. The Times news office needs notices by Wednesday for the Thursday print date due to Memorial Day on Friday May 30.

Poppy Day totals reported as $1181.61 raised

Mrs. Frederick F. Lanz announced that Poppy Day collections reached 1181.61 dollars, not counting Browntown and some rural areas. Co chairmen and numerous volunteers assisted, with supervision by Legion and Auxiliary members. A second item notes a bloodless coup in Beirut installing a leftist government in Sudan.

Penny Around Airlift Raises Funds for March of Dimes

The Green County Pilots Association reports over a thousand people enjoyed airplane rides during the Penny Around Airlift weekend. Proceeds exceed $900 for the March of Dimes. About 14 pilots offered up to ten planes despite cold weather. organizers hope for bigger turnout next time to ease Sunday lines.

Circus Museum marks 10th anniversary in Baraboo spotlight

Thousands gather at Wisconsin World Circus Museum as a new 400 foot long shed for hand carved wagons is dedicated. Gov Knowles honors Jos Schlitz Brewing president Robert A Vihlein Jr with a citation for sponsoring a Milwaukee Fourth of July parade. Museum director C P Chappie Fox is also recognized for assembling the wagon collection.

Historymobile to Visit Monroe for Three More Days

The Wisconsin Historical Society Historymobile will park west of the Junior High School in Monroe for three days. Public hours are today 3 to 4 p.m., Tuesday 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon and 6 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday 3 to 4 p.m. School groups are scheduled for other times.

Monroe Businessman John L Taft Dies At 55 In Monroe

John L Taft a Monroe businessman of 803 17th Ave died this morning May 26 of an apparent heart attack in his home. He owned Monroe Laundromats for six years and held Masonic and Eastern Star roles. Surviving are a brother two sisters and a fiancée. Services set May 28 at Shriner Neushwander Funeral Home with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials to Shriners Hospital and the Mentally Retarded.

Chicago Teachers End Strike With New Contract

Chicago public school teachers voted 9 776 to 585 to accept a one year contract ending a two day strike. Starting salary rises to 8400 dollars yearly with 100 dollar monthly raise and improved benefits. No layoffs, reduced class sizes, and full time substitutes after three years.
