Postal Cuts Stir Congress Over Post Office Rule
Washington reports lawmakers clamor over a new post office order cutting home mail delivery to one daily trip in cities and residential areas to save on manpower. Postmaster General Jesse Donaldson sought 2.2357 billion dollars, but the appropriations committee sliced the request to 2.2075 billion and ordered a June 30 start unless both houses veto or fund the higher total. The plan also closes post offices earlier and speeds slower third class mail, while farm home deliveries remain unchanged.
