Summer heat arrives as city hits 86 and clouds loom
Spring turned to heat as temperatures climbed past 86 by midday. Forecasters predicted mostly cloudy skies with local thundershowers this afternoon and cooler, lower 70s tomorrow. Menomonie reached 90, the warmest reading of the year in the state, while Monroe logged 86 early afternoon.

Dr Harri et Davies Returns from India
Dr Harriet Davies, 71, aunt of Mrs J C Calder, arrives in the United States from India where she served as a medical missionary for about 40 years. She docked Monday on the Queen Mary and will travel to Monroe, which she regards as home. A native of Oshkosh, she had retired but was recalled early in the war and was in Pakistan during border tensions. Davies received Ripon College's 1947 distinguished alumni award.

Lord Wavell Dies After Abdominal Operation at 67
Archibald Percival Wavell the British field marshal and former viceroy of India died following an abdominal operation on May 5, his birthday. The one eyed commander had led early British victories in Africa against Italy driving forces from Egypt and part of Cyrenaica before Rommel counterattacks. Parallel Parking Voted for Avenues
City council today heard a recommendation from the council police and safety committee for parallel parking on 15th and 18th avenues from Sth street to 12th street. The panel also urged set back of stalls about 15 feet at key intersections and action soon on several more cross streets. They proposed an ordinance banning parking by vehicles over 10 000 pounds or 20 feet long and storage of dead vehicles, with city lots conditioned and spaces marked at the parking meter fund’s expense. Wisconsin first quarter traffic deaths reach 53 since 1943
Wisconsin safety division reports 53 pedestrian fatalities in January through April, the lowest first quarter total since 1943, a 16 percent drop from 1949 months. Total traffic fatalities rose 10 percent to 211, vs 191 in the same period last year, with 22 counties recording no fatal mishaps in streets or highways.

State Board Reduces Veterinary Suspension
Madison reports the state board of agriculture reduced the suspension of Dr. W. A. Thomson of Platteville to 90 days starting June 1, allowing all veterinary work except testing for Bang's disease in cattle. Suspect in Holdup Pleads Guilty in Dane County Court
A man pleaded guilty in superior court at Madison today to breaking and entering the Wischoff jewelry store at Oregon and another business at Middleton. He is jailed in Dane County awaiting sentencing after a Monday arrest near Evansville and Janesville when a road blockade with a tractor-trailer was set up. Milton J. Wischoff Jr. owns the Oregon store and is the son-in-law of Monroe resident Paul Knolls.
