AP survey shows 42 senators oppose or lean against a 150000 troop withdrawal from Western Europe while 37 back it and 21 undecided or silent, signaling a clouded Wednesday decision despite Nixon ally support.
Dr. Martin P. Vessey of Oxford University reported at an American Cancer Society conference that a two year study of 220 women using birth control pills found no link to breast cancer and possible protection against benign breast lesions.
Former Vice President Aly Sabry and six cabinet ministers, ousted last week, were moved to jail at dawn amid an alleged plot to overthrow President Anwar Sadat. Investigators will reveal full plot details when the inquiry ends. house arrest had followed Sadat’s purge.
Chief Justice Warren E Burger attacks lawyers who mix insolence with zeal in a 20th century Know-Nothingism. He criticizes new litigation as political trials undermining evidence rules ethics and professional codes. He targets shrill editorials and savage cartoons in a speech for the American Law Institute.
In Burlington Wisconsin on May 16 VFW Post 2312 and Auxiliary members elected three Auxiliary officers to state posts. District leaders chosen include Bernard Boyle First District Commander and Ida Hassinger First District president among others. New officers will start after the June convention.
Green County officials discussed creating a county wide fixed point of referral for mental retardation at the county courthouse. Wisconsin and state agencies would reimburse part of the cost if the county funded the rest and Day Developmental Center would organize the program.
Governor Patrick J. Lucey announces an 18 month health planning task force led by David Carley to create a comprehensive Wisconsin health plan and policy. He also creates a health policy and program council headed by Dr. Ben Lawton to consolidate five existing councils administering federal programs.
Thirty eight riders have registered for the Bike Ride in May set for Saturday May 22 at Green County Special Education School. Funds will aid facilities and services for the mentally retarded in Wisconsin with sponsors from local businesses and citizens. In case of rain the event moves to Sunday.
A mother robin built a nest atop a wrecker at Monroe Lincoln Mercury Sales, 705 30th Street, and the yard is paused. Lloyd Liedschlag says the wrecker will stay put until the eggs hatch, with observers nearby ready to watch the chicks grow and fly. If needed, a borrowed wrecker may be used after the event ends.
The Senate Labor Committee approved 13 to 1 a measure delaying the rail strike to Oct 1 and granting the signalmen about 17 percent wage rise for 13 000 workers. The plan aims to avert further economic disruption and may be sent to President Nixon after House action.
Monroe merchants display Poppy posters for Poppy Day hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary on Friday May 21. Headquarters for the event will be at the First National Bank Community Room with workers checking in for supplies. A volunteer roster led by former presidents coordinates phone calls and staffing for day and evening shifts. Contributions fund veterans and their families. poppies originate from the Wood Veterans Hospital workshop.
The Monroe High School Mixed Chorus will present Oliver Friday and Saturday May 21 and 22 at 8 p.m. in the Monroe Junior High Auditorium. Under directors Mr and Mrs DuWayne Hoffman the show features a small orchestra with Merryth Seaton on violin and Debby Krauss on piano. Oliver Twist is played by Fred Kundert with a cast including Toby Whipple Barbara Barth Jim Bahler Mary Zwygart Clint Olson Carol Baumann and others in roles such as Mr Bumble Widow Corney the Undertaker and Fagin's thieves group.
The Monroe High School production lists Hahlen and Homewood as leads with Nancy played by Shelley Campa and Oliver finding affection with Mr Brownlow. Cast includes John Bauman and others. 12 Junior High School choral boys join as Workhouse Boys. Tickets 75 cents student and 1.25 dollars adult. purchases through chorus members or school office.
The Monroe area Civil Defense will test warning systems on Wednesday May 19. Signals are tested twice monthly on the first and third Wednesdays during summer, with storm warning heard first followed by attack alert. All fire sirens are tested each Saturday noon and a list of signals follows.
The notice explains a three minute steady blast for take cover during an enemy attack, a three minute wailing tone, a two tone alert from WEEZ AM radio, and a noon whistle. All clear signals are issued by police cars with radio announcements ending emergencies.
