AP News In Brief reports a North Vietnamese battery fired two missiles at a U S AC130 gunship 23 miles inside Laos on Sunday. No U S planes were hit. one jet bomber attacked a SAM site with unknown results. Maj Charles Johnson said Soviet missiles had not been fired at an AC130 before.
Pentagon sources say Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird could back a Senate plan to cut U.S. troop strength in Europe to 150,000 as leverage to win greater NATO contributions. The move comes as allied defense ministers meet after Mansfield urges the reduction.
The House moves to reassure Senate backers the revived SST program won’t cost another billion dollars. Boeing spokesmen cited the figure, drawing Senate opposition. Five hours of debate focused on money estimates with a vote expected Wednesday evening.
In Green Bay travelers dressed as 17th century explorers Joliet and Marquette re-create the 298 year old voyage. The garbed paddlers, transported by truck, will enter the Fox River and then the Wisconsin River seeking the historic fur trade land link.

At the Wisconsin Jaycees and Jaycettes State Convention in Madison May 14–15, Mrs. Norman Jaenen of Janesville was elected president of the Jaycettes of Wisconsin, with Mrs. James Monson of Green Bay named external vice president. The gathering also installed new state officers and featured remarks by Bart Starr and Dr. James Turpin. Monroe enjoyed recognition with the Region III Publicity Chapter award and its members hosting a statewide event culminating in the Jaycee Inaugural banquet.
Appreciative audience of about 300 greeted Sanctuary Choir and guests as they performed four selections under director Mrs Perry Power. The program included piano organ duets by Power and John Drew, a soprano solo by Susan Blumer, and a folk singer feature by St John’s Folk Singers. The opening Water Music Suite by Handel introduced an organ duet by Power and Drew. Pasacaglia in C Minor followed.
A Monroe recital featured audience pleasing Bach variations on a bass theme and Haydn Verdure Clad with Miss Blumer. Selections by Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Debussy, and sacred works by Bach and Gounod highlighted an evening praised for musical skill and spiritual warmth.
AFL CIO Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen led a nationwide stoppage affecting 300000 commuters in cities like New York and Chicago, with rail lines shut and Amtrak service halted. Government mediation continued as unions and management faced a 54 to 42 percent wage dispute amid a history of sporadic nationwide strikes.

Alan Jeffrey Johns eighteen of South Wayne died in a one car crash on Highway 11 west of South Wayne at 9 p.m. Sunday May 16. Passenger Dennis L. Meier of Warren Illinois was hospitalized at St. Clare Monroe. Meier’s injuries are not known. Johns, son of Albert B. and Violet Johns, attended nearby schools and graduated Black Hawk High in 1970. He worked for Swiss Colony Monroe and was active in FFA and sports. Funeral at Grace Lutheran Darlington Wednesday with burial at Graceland Blanchardville.
Mrs Wade Hampton Fleck 91 longtime Brodhead resident died at 12 20 am Sunday May 16 at Pleasant View Nursing Home rural Monroe She was born February 14 1880 in Brodhead daughter of Albert and Minnie Bowen She married Wade H Fleek September 15 1903 in Indianapolis He died in 1954 Surviving daughter Helen Marty two grandsons five great grandchildren and sister Edith Cortelyou Services 3 pm Tuesday May 18 at Newcomer Funeral Home Brodhead with Rev Koehler officiating Burial Greenwood Cemetery Brodhead There is no visitation.
