Wisconsin Leader Delays Budget Cuts Backed by Governor

UW President John C. Weaver welcomed Gov. Lucey reevaluating the 1971 73 budget needs. Lucey signaled possible restoration of funds and willingness to acknowledge program and mission differences. In Milwaukee, Medical College plans a $2.2 million eye hospital fund drive beginning in September underwritten by Research to Prevent Blindness.

Early planting progress on Green County corn and crops

About half of Green County corn is planted with 15 acres of 94 day corn sown April 25 on the Paul Stefanik and Sons farm near Albany. Oats are in heavy growth and soybeans are being planted in the east. Reports say soil is breaking well and moisture is present beneath a dry surface.

Music Slide Program Planned Here Thursday

Rev. Cyril A. Reilly of Dubuque will present Joy In Creation at 8 p.m. Thursday May 20 in St Victor's School gymnasium. The 45 minute show blends music color slides and narration recalling creation with Reilly's original score. Admission is free with refreshments served after.

Veterans honored during St. Clare Hospital Week program

Seventy two veterans from St. Clare Hospital received pins and certificates during Hospital Week. Harold Miller, personnel director, served as master of ceremonies in the hospital staff room and helped Administrator Sister M Wilfreda present awards. Larry Lindgren gave the address, with Dr. Merlin J. Olson the chief of staff delivering a congratulatory message and Father Robert D. Platt also present.

Blasting Crew Demonstrates Method on Highway 11 81

A road blasting crew loaded charges for a major highway project about four miles east of Monroe. The last big blast occurred after delays and a carefully timed center-out sequence with 104,320 pound earth movers nearby.

McElhaney Elected to Head Kiwanis Club of Monroe

McElhaney, former vice president, won the Kiwanis Club of Monroe presidency at the May 13 meeting at the VFW Club. Richard Bahr becomes immediate past president.
