Platteville State Uprising Over Beer Age Protests

Several thousand Platteville State University students demonstration against a 21 year beer age escalates into clashes with police. Rioters pelted squad cars with rocks bottles and eggs as fire engines sprayed water and tear gas. four firemen injured, arrests and jail clashes followed. A flag reading 18 Beer was raised at the police station.

Darlington Dairy Day Parade Set for May Saturday

Darlington Dairy Day observance will be held Saturday May 20 featuring bands from Argyle Darlington Stockton and Warren Illinois antique cars from Monroe the Madison Shrine motorcycle cavalcade floats and saddle clubs from Darlington and Gratiot Dairy princess contestants will be judged that morning with winners announced at the end.

Snipers Sought After Texas Southern Officer Death

White helmeted police stormed a dormitory at Texas Southern University to halt student snipers who held a no-man's land on campus. Rookie patrolman Lewis R. Kuba, 25, was killed with a shot between the eyes. Police jail 488 men as they search for the shooter and identify others wounded in the assault.

Famed Monroe resident Mrs Youngblood dies at 93

Mrs Henry M. Youngblood Sr. 93 of 1307 22nd Street died last night at St. Clare Hospital from old age complications after a fall on Palm Sunday. Born Margart Josephine Blackbourn Jan 23 1874 in Apple River Illinois she was a twin of Joseph N. Blackbourn now hospitalised in Dubuque Ia. Her father ran stores in Apple River and Dunbarton and she married Henry Youngblood Sr. in Dunbarton June 11 1902.

Milestone FHA chapter marks 21st anniversary

Members of the Monroe High School Future Homemakers of America celebrated the 21st birthday of the organization with a banquet at the Holiday Inn in Janesville. An 21st birthday candle design decorated the tables and a skit gave a year‑long progress report. Officers installed included Aleda Schuetz as president and Georgia Wegmueller as vice president.

Deputies Seek Opossum in Rabies Bite Case

Deputies searched woods on the William Hartwig farm after a 13 year old girl was bitten by an opossum. Rhonda Mueller was taken to a doctor who advised finding the animal to rule out rabies. The opossum was not located and the girl may begin anti rabies shots if needed.

Monroe Council set June 20 public hearing on housing code

The Monroe City Council approved enforcement of the housing and property maintenance code with a new housing office under the mayor. They adopted liquor licenses, operators’ licenses for Ammacher and McGuire, and reinvestment resolutions. A party wall agreement with Gempler Tire Shop and several payments were authorized.

Four Pets Impounded at City Pound Including Cat

Four dogs and a cat are now at the City Dog Pound. A small brown female all American type dog picked up last week is running out for immediate claim. Two small terrier dogs were placed there Monday evening, another small brown female joined Tuesday. The lone female cat, a yellow and dark color mix, has been at the pound for a week.
