Rudolph T. Haskee reports that 21 Green County students achieved perfect 100s in the spring Conservation course covering forestry. Culmination Day featured morning programs at Juto New Glarus Monroe and four afternoons in New Glarus State Park Woods with outdoor projects.
The Bloodmobile visit in New Glarus gathered 42 pints of blood toward a 52 pint quota. Forty seven donors participated with five rejected blood donations.
Loum hospital hosted a Family Fun Night visit by the Monroe City Band and The Tempos high school combo. Allan F. Barnard directed the band with Naomi Barnard assisting, as patients enjoyed twist and waltz numbers with refreshments served.
Harmony events headline the second annual Parade of Quartets at Green County Barbershop Chorus. The show features championship quartets and the 30 member county chorus, starting at 7 58 p m in the junior high school auditorium. Proceeds support the bandshell at Twining Park and red jackets for the chorus. Afterglow tickets offer informal singing and refreshments in Turner Hall after the show.
SFC Otto Erzinger, finishing grade school teaching in Albany, becomes administrative supply technician for Co. B Green County National Guard. Sgt. Kohlhagen moves to State Headquarters Detachment at Madison, wearing Wisconsin Badger patch, and continues duties full time from Nov 16 1948. The Kohlhagens plan to move to Madison. home at 2023 20th Terrace is for sale.
Postmaster R J Myers of Monroe announces May 1823 as Mailbox Improvement Week to ensure mail receptacles are located neat safe and weather resistant. Rural carriers will inspect boxes and notices to fix paint move or replace will be sent. noncompliance may trigger withdrawal of service. Names must be on boxes in neat contrasting letters at least one inch high.
Milwaukee public schools will hold classes as usual Monday despite a boycott planned by civil rights groups over de facto segregation. The board rejected Mayor Maier's call for an impartial three member panel and faced picket plans at 12 central city schools. Police will protect picket lines and church freedom schools will aid about 11,000 pupils staying out. Civil rights organizers say 250 teachers offered help and 11,000 students may be affected after a racial count showed 24,000 non white students system wide.
Wisconsin cheddar prices rose a quarter to a half cent while government contracts for 38.3 million pounds boosted activity. June Cheese Month promos spurred demand as supplies remained ample and CCC movement rose. Wisconsin Swiss market stayed weak with prices steady to one cent lower and slow buying.
A new municipal parking lot across from the Armory in Monroe is finished awaiting oil treatment on gravel before opening. It can host about 30 cars after two homes were cleared to clear space. Uncertain if paving will occur this summer. In Laos, Meo villagers report severe casualties from Communist attacks, possibly around 1000 civilians dead.
Richard Joseph Aurit 26 was found burned to death beside a tractor on the family farm two miles northwest of Shullsburg. Coroner ruled accidental death with no inquest. He lived with his parents and leaves three sisters. Services set for Monday at St Matthew's Church.
Green County dairy events are set with Miss Sandra Weiss appearing on Dairyland Jubilee at 7 p.m. Saturday June 6 on Channel 27 in Madison. The June Dairy Month kickoff banquet is Monday June 1 at Albany Methodist Church. The nine queen finalists banquet is Thursday June 25 at Juda EUB Church. Dairy Day follows Saturday June 27 at Juda. Former UW players Pat Richter and Jim Bakken will speak at the Queen’s banquet. Dr. Harold Calvert will be master at the kickoff breakfast in Albany.
The hospital switchboard handles about 300 external and internal calls daily with a five outside line system and 59 stations. Operators locate doctors via a paging system to connect consultations quickly, maintaining a “show must go on” attitude as staff rally to cover shifts.
An early morning storm jolted Monroe area residents with thunder and lightning and rainfall. Utilities reported no major outages though crop fields were badly washed in some areas. Rain totals ranged from 0.63 to 1.3 inches with Monticello near the highest amount. Local lines and phone service reported minor disturbances, with no serious damage.
Carthage College will relocate from Carthage Illinois to Kenosha Wisconsin this summer. The tradition of kissing girls on a granite rock on campus will be carried to the new site with male students bringing a two and a half ton chunk for the ritual.
Joseph Smith 18 of Milwaukee, a Notre Dame freshman, drowned Friday night in St Joseph Lake on campus while trying to aid two classmates whose sailboat capsized. The incident occurred near the university grounds.
