Lions Club to Door Deliver Light Bulbs Monday

Monroe residents are reminded that Lions Club members will distribute light bulbs Monday night as part of the annual Light the Way campaign for the visually handicapped. The club supports civic projects including outdoor theater gifts, glasses for the visually impaired, aid to the blind, and school visual testing equipment. It also funds two scholarships to the Lions summer camp for the visually handicapped at Rosholt Wisconsin.

Monroe Co. B Holds To Reserve Position In Mesa Drive

In Yakima Washington Monroe County B Company 2nd Battle Group faced repeated air patrols during Operation Mesa Drive. Capt Dwight Coplien reported good morale despite cold rain and overcast skies while soldiers noted the lack of sun and the challenge of wet weather. A first night lull preceded continuing pilot buzzing with no enemy attack reported. Private Don Drye and Private First Class John Surrell voiced disappointment with rain and lack of sunshine.

Kennedy Attends Milwaukee Democratic Dinner

President Kennedy joins Wisconsin Democrats at the Milwaukee Arena for the Jefferson-Jackson dinner. Gov. Nelson and Atty. Gen. Reynolds sit with Kennedy at the head table, joined by Sen. Gibson Announces Candidacy for Wisconsin State Senate

Irven Gibson of Platteville declared his bid for the Republican nomination to represent Wisconsin’s 17th District, which includes Grant Green and Lafayette Counties. Speaker Chosen for 1862 Commencement Address

Dr. Bjarne R. Ullsvik will deliver the commencement address in the high school gym on June 7. Ullsvik, president of the Wisconsin State College and Institute of Technology at Platteville since Sept 1, 1958, has a long record in K 12 and college teaching and earned a UW degree trio. His talk is titled Hammers and Anvils.

Electrical Storm Strikes County with Minor Damages

An overnight electrical storm hit the county around 2 30 am bringing high winds heavy rain thunder lightning and hail. Wisconsin Power and Light reported outages but no major damage and power was restored after a fuse blew at the Brodhard sub station. The United Telephone Co faced toll trouble but service should be back tonight. Over an inch of rain fell in Monroe causing gullies and soil runoff while cropland likely suffered the most. No injuries were reported.

Astronaut Carpenter Delays May 19 Flight

Cape Canaveral officials say the orbital sighting of astronaut Malcom Scott Carpenter slips two days to May 19 because of a minor automatic control system problem in his capsule. The three orbit mission mirrors John Glenn's earlier flight as Carpenter continues preparations.

Holleman Resigns Over Estes Gift Letter to Kennedy

Assistant Secretary of Labor Jerry R. Holleman resigns after admitting he accepted a $1,000 gift from Texas financier Billie Sol Estes.
