Prof Grant Milford Hyde ends a 50 year UW journalism career July 1. Born in The Dalles Oregon, he studied architecture briefly before switching to journalism. He directed the UW Press Bulletin and taught from 1919, influencing Madison architecture with casement windows and brick veneer.

Albert Maurer Dies Here at 89
Albert R. Shorty Maurer Sr. 89 longtime Monroe school custodian 32 years died at his son’s home. Born July 6 1869 in Doerlitz Germany he immigrated 1881 and married Henrietta Schillinger in 1902. He retired eight years ago and cared for race horses at the airgrounds. Surviving five children nine grandchildren 15 great grandchildren and his wife died in 1957. Services set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Stuessy funeral home with burial in Greenwood cemetery.

Minstrel Show Closes With Overflow Crowd Applauding
The sixth annual Madcap Minstrel Show at the school auditorium drew an overflow crowd for its second and final night. Mrs. Allan F. Barnard directed and produced, her husband arranged music and led the City Band. The cast presented a gift of a portable transistor radio to the Barnards in appreciation for their hours of work. Gerald Lamb was named Lions Club scholarship winner. Albert Hirschy joined the act to add humor. Encores kept the performers on stage as folding chairs filled the aisles and the show set a record for six years of the event.

The Blackhawk Broadcasting Co of Monroe applied to the Federal Communications Commission to start a new FM radio station in Ft. Atkinson. The group is led by Robert K. Brown with Robert W. Westbury Building Collapse Traps Workers in Long Island
A large Westbury industrial building under construction collapsed at about 11 a.m. trapping up to 20 workers. Rescue crews cleared rubble from the 200 by 150 foot site at Westbury Industrial Park while ambulances ferried injured to hospitals. At least one person died as cranes helped reach trapped laborers amid a chaotic scene.
