The Green Engineering survey funded largely by a federal grant predicts Monroe will hit 11000 residents by 1980 and Green County over 30700. It notes rapid birth rates, aging trends, and a shrinking 20 to 44 working-age group pointing to limited local job opportunities.

In Tokyo a freight engineer Norifumi Minakami and four other railway workers were arrested on suspicion of criminal negligence after a three train crash killed 154 and injured more than 165. Minakami said he may have missed a signal and apologized as police noted a green signal light may have been impossible.
A Polaris missile with an advanced nose cone and guidance system was successfully launched from a land pad on a 1,500 mile plus test flight. The test evaluated components for an extended 2,875 mile range version of the missile.
