AP News In Brief reports Sen. Birch Bayh D-Ind proposes an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits to aid about 300 000 out of work Americans now. He estimates up to one million could be helped within two to three months.
State Rep. Kenyon Giese of Sauk City condemned Gov. Patrick Luceys push to merge Wisconsin universities. He warned the merger would create a vast educational empire with about 130000 students and strain oversight by a single part-time board of regents.
Five young men hijacked a Philippine airliner today and diverted it to Canton in Red China. Four Americans were among the passengers flown to Canton after the diversion, with the hijackers reportedly aiming to return the plane and the 25 aboard quickly.
FDA inspectors say staffing shortages hinder monitoring of processed foods. Over the past six months recalls have tied adulterants and contaminants to items like soda due to lubricating oil pesticide in cheese and noodles metal fragments in cereal and glass in coffee whitener. Most foods remain free of contamination but sanitation issues persist.
Washington AP reports the nation's railroads urging Congress to provide 600 million dollars annually to prevent government takeover and level profits with other transport modes.
