Four Americans aboard the Philippines airliner hijacked to Communist China returned to Manila. Russell Ebersole, head of a Baptist mission there, said Chinese officials apologized to passengers for the hijackers' actions and canceled the disruption.
U S helicopters landed a small force of elite South Vietnamese commandos in southern Laos for a raid on a North Vietnamese base near the border. North Vietnamese forces retaliated by moving about 125 miles southeast and attacking the district capital of Oe Duc, burning much of the town.
Wisconsin Attorney General Robert W. Warren urged strict rules for rock music festivals and state funding of local law enforcement reinforcements. He cited a minority of hoodlums involved in rapes extortion violence shootings and stabbings. A promoter plans a June festival near Iola with about 35 000 attendees seeking Adams County permit.
An early morning blaze on a five story brick apartment building in Boston killed four residents and injured twelve. Fire officials say the fire origin is suspicious and note two prior fires in the same structure during the past year. About 150 residents escaped or were rescued. some remained unaccounted for as injuries involved burns and smoke inhalation.
Michigan Senator Philip A. Hart a Senate dove and oil industry critic rejects charges that U.S. oil interests push continued American involvement in Vietnam. Hart supports the Nixon administration denial of the claim raised by Another Mother for Peace, an anti war group in California.
Seven deaf students at a Milwaukee school for the deaf raised 12 dollars for a poverty clothing fund. The effort followed a two week project in which 11,000 cans were collected and sold to a metal can company for recycling, linking pollution effort with charity.
Sen Strom Thurmond and his 24 year old wife welcomed a one hour old daughter weighing seven pounds eleven ounces. Doctors reported both mother and baby doing well. The newborn adds to Thurmonds family as he stated plans for possibly more children.
The chief defense lawyer for Sharon Tate’s murder trial says appeals of Charles Manson and his three followers may last five years and go to the Supreme Court if needed. Paul Fitzgerald announced plans to launch the appeal on April 19 at a hearing before Superior Court Judge Charles Older, who presided over the trial that ended Monday. The defense seeks to reduce the death penalties to life imprisonment and to lower convictions to second degree murder.
In 17 years of marriage Arthur and Mrs Berry adopted seven children. Last week Mrs Berry gave birth to Ann Marie a 7 pound baby girl in Stockbridge Michigan. The Berry home sits on a five acre plot with a farm including a horse two ponies goats rabbits chicks and a St Bernard named Dora.
The Monroe Jaycettes 13th annual Charity Style Show in Turner Hall showcased spring styles for men and women with 450 guests in the evening and 300 in the afternoon. Miss Wisconsin Linda Jane Johnson modeled gowns and spoke about her year as Miss Wisconsin, while designers including Florine's, Made-O'Day, J. C. Penney, Spurgeons, Style Shop, and Winkler's Furriers displayed easy care knits, prints, and textures from empire to lowered waistlines. The show featured Scene I Daytime Playtime wear and menswear from Benkert's, G. Stuart's, and Schuetze's, with accessories from Clark's, Kundert-Loeffel, and Pace-Setter. The event ended with bewitching evening wear and a finale noted as Turn to No. 1 Back Page.
American Athletes in Action weight lifting team led by Dave Hannah and Russ Knipp will appear in Monroe on Thursday April 1. Events include a Kiwanis Club noon talk, a weight lifting lecture at Monroe Senior High, and an 8 p.m. public performance. The tour promotes personal faith with Christ and is sponsored by Souls Unlimited. Knipp, 5 feet 2 inches, recently returned from Warsaw where he won a gold medal. Hannah is a former OSU football standout and bent arm pullover record holder. A door donation will be collected.
The Frank Mashuda Companies Associated of Milwaukee will resume grading and structures on Highway 11 from three miles east of Monroe to the County Trunk G junction 7.8 miles away starting Monday April 5. Detours for Highways 11 and 81 are set via Albany and Highway 104 to the Green Rock County line. The Wingra Stone Company will start base work in late June, project value 292 660 dollars, paving let June 29 with construction Aug through October completion. Gilbert Becker will act as project engineer.
Lt. William Calley Jr. was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court martial jury that convicted him of killing My Lai villagers. He urged the panel to consider his troops and his defense of their lives, while peaceful and large protests rose in support and around the stockade.

The fixed point of referral for mental retardation information distribution is terminated until a new director is appointed. Mrs Allan Barnard, board chair, says workload stabilization and an intensive study of the need for such a point will follow the director's appointment.
