New Era for Modern Club White Elephant Plans Unveiled

Joseph Denny and Marco Bregenzer announced the purchase of the Modern Club east of Monroe on Highway 11-81. They will rename it Joe's White Elephant with a new 35-25 addition housing six pool tables and 10 amusement machines, plus live music nights and expanded parking. The venue will serve beer and soft drinks, with enhanced security and public access, aiming to keep young adults from traveling to larger cities.

Brodhead Girls Found Safe After Missing 24 Hours

Two sisters aged 16 and 17 from Beloit were missing for a day before being found near Brodhead. They said six youths forced them from a car, took them to Rockford, and that one girl locked herself in a room while the other waited outside. A physician found no injuries. Beloit police saw a similar car Saturday.

Storm Lashes Walworth County Sheltering Lake Geneva Area

A swift spring storm ripped roofs from homes and farm buildings across Delavan Lake Williams Bay and Lake Geneva injuring one person. Debris blocked highways, power outages lasted up to four hours, and damage was estimated in the six figures. Authorities surveyed rural areas as a motel under construction was damaged and a lakeside home burned.

Madison Women Promote PTA Cultural Development Efforts

Four Madison women spoke at Monroe PTA Council to boost city and state level cultural development efforts. Mrs. T. B. Hanna chairs the local committee. Mrs. John Rowe outlined state organizing work that links Madison and other communities with cultural activities in drama reading dance and music. Madison currently supports arts programs in more than half the elementary schools under Mrs. Arthur Siebens.

Woman Injured In Area Mishap Near Monroe

Mrs. Walter Ovamp, route 4, Monroe, is in fair condition at St. Clare Hospital after a motor vehicle accident about 2:30 yesterday afternoon. Her pickup ran off County Trunk C five and one half miles west of Highway 69, tipped into a ditch due to a downhill loss of control blamed on a blowout. Damages included the left-front fender, left door, and roof. Admitted at 3:20 p.m.

Blizzard Slammed Plains States Driving Snow Toward Minnesota

A wind powered blizzard slammed the Great Plains with up to 18 inches of snow in parts. The storm centered in western South Dakota, Colorado and Wyoming, moving east toward Minnesota and Iowa, dropping as much as 16 inches at Sturgis South Dakota and six inches at Rapid City with drifts up to eight feet.

Cars Recovered By Law Officers

Green County Sheriff W E Deininger reports a stolen car from Monticello was recovered in Winnebago County Illinois. Another vehicle stolen near Rockford and found in Monticello was also recovered. Investigators note no damage details yet. Separately a 1963 convertible damaged after running off County Trunk C near Attica. The car owned by James K Olson was driven by unknown occupants prior to the 4 p.m. Sunday crash.

Violent storm hits Monroe area with church strike and outages

A late afternoon thunderstorm battered Green County with hail and heavy rain. Lightning struck the First Methodist Church steeple in Monroe, damaging shingles and a steeple structure while interior heat rose due to thermostat effects. Nearby, the Willis Elmer farm home suffered attic fire and water damage, though occupants were away. A power substation outage north of Evansville cut electrical service for Albany and surrounding areas for about 10 minutes, with wider regional outages reported.
