Knowles Defends Budget Amid Critics Over 832 Million Plan

Wisconsin Governor Warren Knowles rebutted Democratic critics of his 832 million budget, saying he would slow the rate of increase rather than cut current expenditures. He cited a Sept. 24 Milwaukee meeting and a Taxpayers Alliance event with rival Gov. Reynolds to argue that inflationary costs and necessary aid rises drive the budget. He plans to brief Republican caucuses statewide to build support and will meet President Johnson to discuss the National Guard reorganization and a Western District federal judge seat. He also said he still holds stock in several companies and resigned private posts, calling his holdings a citizen's right.
