Surviving include his wife a son Earl Madison two daughters Lillian Chicago and Mrs Wallace Peast Freeport six grandchildren a brother Charles Afton Minnesota and two sisters Carrie and Clara Janesville. New York Walter Winchell says he will quit ABC radio and television by Christmas after nearly 25 years with the network. He requested and received a release from a six figure contract in a Feb 10 letter to ABC directors and may join another network or produce his own newscasts. ABC regrets the split but says the disagreement could not be resolved and the release takes effect December 25, 1955 or sooner if details permit.

Fleming Dies At 73 In London Penicillin Discoverer
Sir Alexander Fleming, 73, eminent discoverer of penicillin, died at his London home. He produced penicillin in 1928 and later devoted his efforts to the antibiotic during World War II. He called the discovery “pure luck” as a mould on a plate dissolved bacteria beside his eyes.

Oscar F. Mayer, 95, founder of the meat packing firm, died at his Chicago home. Born in Bavaria in 1859, he arrived in the U.S. in 1873, started in Detroit, moved to Chicago in 1876, and opened a retail market in 1883. The company later became Oscar Mayer and C, expanding with plants in Madison, Prairie du Chien, Davenport, and Philadelphia. His son Oscar G. Mayer became company president in 1909.

The official canvass of votes cast Tuesday in the primary election has been completed at the county clerk Ray E. Kundert office. On the canvass board were Mrs Ed Kaderly Sr Republican and Michael R Hyland Democratic. A powerful wind storm tore through Pennsylvania Indiana and Ohio with winds up to 92 mph causing fires uprooted trees power outages and collapsed structures. Two people were killed including Pauline Dugas 59 in Rankin Pa and Orin Ramsey 34 in Brookville Pa. The storm heavily hit Connersville and Union City as it moved along the Indiana Ohio line and toward Newcomerstown.

A powerful wind storm wrecked a Philco plant in Connersville and toppled a New York Central freight car. In Pittsburgh a 550 foot WENS tower fell and KDKA TV lost power for at least 15 minutes, while WLOA’s tower in Braddock was knocked over. Fire and police swamped with calls as storms ripped through Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania, with winds up to 98 mph in the Pittsburgh area and the Ohio River cresting at Louisville. Dust storms with winds up to 70 mph swept across Great Plains states, blotting spring weather and harassing farmers. Colorado officials estimated half of winter wheat acreage, about three million acres, torn out. Winds lashed topsoil through Oklahoma Texas Nebraska and Kansas. crop damage totals were not estimated. Pilots reported climbing to 19 000 feet unable to clear black clouds, visibility in parts of western Kansas down to 25 feet, and dust even blew into Missouri.
