Miracle save for Pan American 707 lands after wing loss

Pan American Flight 843 with 143 passengers and 10 crew faced a midflight wing loss when engine No. 4 detached and a section of the wing burned away. Captain Charles H. Kimes steered toward Travis Air Force Base, avoiding casualties. landing gear had to be cranked manually before a safe touchdown.
