Band Concert At Recreation Park Tonight In Monroe

Hundreds of Monroe residents attend one of the area’s largest Old Timers Massed Band concerts tonight at 8 on the Recreation Park ball diamond. The program features Monroe high school band city band and county musicians directed by Allan Barnard with Charles A Booth as emcee and Maureen Bruni presenting a marimba solo.

Eisenhower seeks four star rank for Ridgway

President Eisenhower asks the Senate to approve permanent four star rank for General Matthew Ridgway effective when he retires as army chief of staff on June 30. The move would elevate Ridgway’s standing in the military hierarchy and recognition of his service.

Final Dairy Day Plans Announced

Marshall D. Markham announces the complete Junior Dairy Day program in Brodhead for Saturday as part of June Dairy Month. 15 000 are expected for a parade carnival band concert two queen coronations street dance two cattle shows and several home demonstrations. Cattle judging begins at 10 00 a m with 150 head plus. the county and Brown Swiss queens will be crowned at 11 45 a m. The eight county contestants are from Monroe Brodhead Juda Brooklyn Monticello New Glarus Brown Town and Albany.

Talks resume between AMC and UAW in Detroit

American Motors Corp and the CIO United Auto Workers union resume wage talks in Detroit Tuesday after two days of bargaining in Milwaukee. The two sides previously met in Milwaukee to discuss guaranteed wage terms for workers.

Shriners See Braves Rally to Beat Giants 8 7 on Excursion

Nearly 200 Green County Shrine Club members and guests traveled by special train from Monroe to Milwaukee for a dramatic major league game. The Braves erased a 5-0 deficit to edge the New York Giants 8-7, lifting to third in the National League. Shrine officers Johnson Hawthorne and Reasa led the trip with meals prepared on the return train.

Guardsmen Start Tactical Problem At Camp McCoy

Monroe's National Guard unit Co. K joins other units as 32nd division begins a 48 hour tactical problem during a two week summer encampment at Camp McCoy. Regular Army forces simulate attacking an atomic weapons storage point while Red Arrow division defends. A pre-dawn meeting prompted 1600 transit workers to strike in Los Angeles, halting services for streetcars and buses and leaving about 900,000 riders stranded or seeking alternate transport.

Centennial observance honors Fighting Bob LaFollette

More than 1,000 people attended a Madison centennial tribute to Robert M. LaFollette Sr. born in Primrose Dane County on June 14 1855. Earl Warren called LaFollette a model of the Wisconsin Idea and praised his principles as essential to preserve the union and progress. Justice Warren cited reforms from direct primaries to labor rights as once considered radical but now accepted. Philip LaFollette introduced Warren at the event with family history noted.

Weekend Mishaps Reported Across County

Three weekend accidents in Green County left one man uninjured while others were minor. Casper Yaun escaped serious harm when his car collided with a milk truck two miles north of New Glarus. Ralph Neely Myers and Rudy Berg sustained minor vehicle damage on Highway 81 five miles northwest of Monroe. Roger D. Krauss and Otto Buergisser damaged vehicles in a city intersection crash at 21st Street and 16th Avenue.

Cheese Day draws national attention to Green County event

A Saturday Green County Picture Press Conference prompted a unanimous vote of thanks to 200 participants. The Associated Press distributed the 83 wheel Swiss cheese photo to major papers nationwide. Editors from coast to coast received the cheese image by wirephoto before 10 a.m. The show impressed photographers and TV crews, who may return for Wilhelm Tell at New Glarus on September 4 and 5 and Cheese Day in Monroe on September 10.

June brought a surge of marriage licenses as Ray E. Kundert reports ten licenses issued in the county last week. Five licenses were issued Monday the heaviest day since he took office, with one issued during the week and four more on Saturday.

Col Lorenz Dies At Guard Review

Lt Col Thomas H Lorenz commander of the 135th Medical Battalion collapsed during the Wisconsin National Guard 32nd division Governor Day review at Camp McCoy. The Madison native who taught medicine at the University of Wisconsin left a wife Alta Mae and two children Tommy and Susan among 3000 spectators.

Court Takes Over Baby Girl After Transfusions

A 10 day old girl in Englewood New Jersey improved slightly after transfusions begun against parental religious objections. Gail Bertimato remained in critical condition at Englewood Hospital as doctors corrected RH negative blood factors. State custody was ordered by a judge after police were notified and the County Welfare Department took the baby for treatment.

Burkhalter Rites Set Following Sudden Heart Attack

Edward Burkhalter 56 of Avon Township Rock County died Saturday afternoon of a heart attack suffered while haying at a son in law Melvin Mauerman farm in Sylvester Township. He is survived by his wife Amy Carter, three daughters and a son, two grandchildren, and five sisters. Services Tuesday at 2 p m at New Comer funeral home Brodhead with Rev Marcus Lewis officiating. Gold Membership Card Ready for Gen. Twining

A gold plated life membership card in Monroe's Zilmer Riley American Legion post will be presented to Gen Nathan F Twining at the state Legion convention in Milwaukee next month. Post commander Arthur C Benkett said the card will be given at the banquet where Gen Twining will be guest speaker.
