Pole barn project advances at university spring field day
A 30 cow pole barn at the university near Hills Farms west of Madison will be ready for inspection at the spring field day on June 14. The design uses pole foundations and rough lumber siding, with careful post fitting and a shingled roof. Ray Pinnow near Brodhead plans a rapid build, saying four men can erect the barn by July 4. Pinnow farms 70 sheep of Hampshire, Shropshire, Cheviot and Corriedale breeds, with Corriedale cross noted for vigor. He raises fall lambs born February 1 and plans fall pigs by June 15 after a February farrowing, selling feeders at 8–10 weeks. A nearby Wyss farm barn off Highway 59 undergoes widening, new stanchions, a barn cleaner, and a cement silo to replace a damaged wooden one from May wind. A pole barn is highlighted as a cost cut in milk production, using tered cut lumber and claiming about half the cost of a regular stanchion barn, according to farm engineer S A Witzel.
