Badger Briefs report two child deaths in a car truck crash raising Wisconsin 1973 traffic fatalities to 411, with 426 a year earlier. Other items include a rural Tomah family robbery at knifepoint, a missing Richland Center teen feared drowned, wetlands veto bill debate, and state budget actions on pay, layoffs, and grooming rules for Madison firefighters.
Monroe Wisconsin volunteers stage a fire demonstration on Sunday at 1 15 p m on the square with a bucket brigade and aerial truck rescue showing James Barrett as the victim being lowered from the Benkett Building by rope and wooden stretcher. Other rescues are planned and the public is invited.
A Sunday program by Monroe Volunteer Firemen will include a Benkett Building demonstration and a Bucket Brigade with 12 departments from southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. The event opens at 1 15 with a flag raise and features advances in hose evolutions ladder raises pumping two 1000 gallon per minute pumpers rescues and street deluge nozzle operations.

The top ten candidates for the Monroe Dairy Queen queen title were named by Mrs. Roger Stauffacher. Voters can cast one ballot with each dairy product purchase over 20 cents, with green ballots worth five votes. Balloting runs to June 23 in 11 Times listed stores, leading to a Band Concert introduction and final crowning during the Monroe Swiss Club meeting at Turner Hall.
GOP Senate Leader Raymond Johnson assailed Governor Lucey for meddling in the Wisconsin legislature as conference committee members reopened talks on the 2.7 billion budget. He urged proposals like a 5.5 million Vietnam veterans aid program be handled by the veterans department rather than HEAB, while Rep. Dennis Conta warned against veto threats over need based aid. The session followed criticism of secret meetings and plans for a second gathering.
A June 28 TV appearance on WISC Channel 3 Madison will introduce the eleven new Green County Dairy Queens and the retiring Green County Dairy Queen Wendy Hartwig and Dairy Princess Barbara Marty. Judges from Evansville Waunakee and an American Dairy Association representative will preside. A luncheon, interviews, and public reception follow in Monroe with the Queen’s Banquet that evening at Monroe High School.
