One death today and two Tuesday night in separate accidents push Wisconsin’s 1973 traffic fatality toll to 421, down from 428 on the same date in 1972. The state’s weather eased after a cold front, with showers ending and sunny periods returning, highs in the 70s.
Citizens protested two rezoning items at Tuesday's Monroe City Council meeting. An ordinance to rezone Tallman's Addition property from R-2 to Business was defeated 6-1 after a lengthy hearing. Wesley Dodge presented a petition from area residents opposing the business classification citing lower property values and traffic concerns.
The council voted 6 to 1 against the Diversified Corp rezoning for a 20 unit apartment complex with 43 off street parking spaces and 3,000 square feet of office space. Alderman Coplien abstained due to involvement in the deal citing neutrality. A separate action to rezone land for six additional trailers at New Frontier Trailer Court was tabled amid resident opposition over increased traffic and parking.
Monroe 84 year old Fred H Disch died from injuries after being struck by a car while walking across a bridge near Bluff View Brodhead Tuesday at 3 40 p m He was Green County s sixth traffic fatality for 1973 He died at St Clare Hospital after being admitted at 4 45 p m The driver Matthew W Douglas 16 Juda and a passenger Jan A LaBorde 17 Juda had minor injuries The sheriff s investigation says Disch was fishing on the south edge of the bridge and walked to the north side when struck The car was westbound on Wis 11 and 81
Green County Dairy Queen Wendy Hartwig and Dairy Princess Barbara Marty will hand out dairy samples in Monroe on the remaining Fridays of June Dairy Month. They appear at First National Bank June 8 from 2 p.m. and again June 22, then June 15 at First Federal Savings from 5 p.m. to close and June 29 at Commercial and Savings Bank from 5 p.m. to close. Winners of the Radio Quizz are Mary Sulzer and Mrs. Robert Hartwig.
President Nixon announced a major White House staff overhaul with Gen. Alexander Haig retiring from active duty to become assistant to the President, Melvin Laird named domestic affairs counselor and NSC member, and Ronald Ziegler expanding duties as assistant to the President and policy participant.

The Senate moves to vote on a new five year farm program designed to shield growers from economic loss while lowering consumer prices. It uses target prices for wheat, feed grains, and cotton and could cost about $2.6 billion in 1974 if prices drop to 1972 levels.
The Skylab crew practicing a four hour space walk to pry or cut free a stuck one inch aluminum strip holding a one ton solar panel. Commander Charles Conrad Jr. and Dr. Joseph Kerwin will execute the maneuver with Paul Weitz relaying from inside the workshop. The task could add about 3000 watts of power and enable full experiment schedules.
