The Monroe high school senior class of 123 received diplomas in a ceremony marked by praise and reflection. Co valedictorians Sandra Scherer Brandli and Grace D Bidlingmaier led remarks alongside Rev Morris Wee who urged grads to face a difficult world with Christian faith. Rose Cromwell, aided by crutches, received her diploma as classmates applauded and sang the school song.

Veterans Back Reserve Setup Pushes for Overhaul Bill
Leaders of reserve and veterans groups urged President Eisenhower to back a modernization of the military reserve system. Ten organizations formed the National Security Committee to push the administration bill, which would raise reserve strength to about four times the current level. The bill stalled in the House last month amid disputes over anti segregation amendments.

Mrs William Smith formerly Viola Watson of Cadiz Township died at 2 25 PM today at her home 907 13th Avenue Monroe from a heart condition She would have turned 94 on June 19 She had been in a wheelchair since 1947 Her husband died July 22 1949 Services are pending at Shriner Neushwander funeral home

Wisconsin Hearing Plans On 20 Percent Surtax And Cigaret Tax
Madison lawmakers learn next Wednesday if a 20 per cent surtax on income taxes will be enacted to raise 29 million in two years. Chicago police investigated the slaying of Rev. John Chiramal a 40 year old Indian Catholic priest. He died at Mother Cabrini hospital from stab wounds to the chest and arm after collapsing at the Little Sisters of the Poor residence on Chicago's near West Side. He founded and directed Boys Town in India and had traveled to the United States to solicit funds. Police report he had been robbed and attacked far from the sisters' home.
