Monroe tornado alert triggers mixed public response
Monroe issued its first official tornado alert Saturday afternoon using a temporary siren system. Fire Chief Josef J. Benkert said a funnel sighting south of Monroe prompted a 4 05 p.m. long siren followed by a wailing signal to take cover. People ventured outside or sought basements while others ignored warnings. Firemen remained ready, with dispersed equipment, as officials noted the alert would extend to reliable reports from sheriff police or Ground Observer Corps and only an all clear from radio would end the alert. The system caused heavy calls to United Telephone Co. with delays in responding.

Jacob F. Rupp Jr., 60, of 915 24th Street, died at 4 15 am yesterday at St. Clare hospital after surgery. He was born May 26, 1898 in Adams Township, married Edna Geigel on November 11, 1920, and farmed in Washington Township before retiring to Monticello.
