Britain’s two week dock strike ends as 46 000 longshoremen accept a government Court of Inquiry and halt the walkout. The action, the first nationwide dock tie up in 44 years, threatened food shortages.
President Nixon winds up initial budget talks amid a reported 2.9 billion dollar deficit for the 1970 fiscal year ending June 30, 1969 forecasted later as a surplus. NASA chief Thomas Paine resigns effective Sept 15 returning to General Electric amid space budget notes.
In Peoria Illinois racial violence erupted sporadically after a city council meeting where curfews had been declared earlier. Police report Horace Jones aged 22 a leader of the United Front entered the chamber climbed a railing and began reading a statement the group had submitted three weeks prior.
The Monroe Chocolate Shop on the north side of Courthouse Square is sold. George Wells and Mr and Mrs Jack Marty announce possession August 1. The shop opened in 1927 by George Calomeres and Peter Mehas.
A motorcycle collision near Dickeyville on Highway 151 killed Leroy W. Thompson 21 and Elaine Degurse 20. Kenneth Coates 25 driver of the opposing car survived with injuries. Thompson, a Platteville State University senior, and Degurse were fellow travelers in a fatal Grant County crash that raised Wisconsin’s 1970 highway toll to 611. Funeral services for Thompson are scheduled at Yellowstone Lutheran Church with burial at the church cemetery.
Three Illinois Central Railway cars derailed three miles south of Monticello injuring conductor K. M. Anderson 57 flagman Keith R. Dickenson 42 and head breakman D. L. Smith 38 all from Freeport. Fireman Delbert Scouel uninjured. Train at 30 mph from Freeport to Madison. Crew shaken. tracks and ties torn up. cars moved for removal and investigation scheduled.
Israel's divided cabinet adjourned after a two hour session as Gahal ministers threaten to quit over the U S Middle East peace plan. Menahem Begin blasted Rogers plan as a plan for Israel's destruction while Dayan denied resigning.
AFL CIO President George Meany urged Congress to raise the federal minimum wage to at least $2 an hour, arguing current wages of $1.60 lose purchasing power versus 1966 levels. He criticized welfare lure and emphasized workers should not be pushed to welfare to survive.
Neelian Nelson of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau travels to Washington, D.C. to press Congress on farm legislation. He criticizes the current Food and Agriculture Act of 1965 and urges passage of strengthened bargaining laws, butterfat price support revision, Class One Base Program authority, extended indemnity for pesticides, and dairy surplus support for servicemen, aiming to defeat the latest bill and align policy with Nixon campaign promises as Tariff Commission hearings on dairy imports proceed.
The 116th Green County Fair in Monroe opened at 1 p.m. under cloudy skies after morning rain that refreshed fields. The day featured pony and horse judging, open class cheese judging at 2 p.m., and a tribute to Hugh Roberts Sr. for his lifelong work with show ponies. Politician Jay Sykes visited the fair.
John F Duffey Irish of Mesa Arizona visits Monroe for Green County Fair harness events. He is a veteran trainer and driver with ranches in Arizona and Ohio, and he and his wife stay with their daughter and son in law Dr Gene Hennager. Duffey praises Monroe hospitality and notes racing life at fairs offers a contrast to big time circuits.
