More than 2,000 youths clashed with police at Grant Park after Sly and the Family Stone canceled a free concert. Cars were overturned and burned, 63 injured including 24 officers, 148 arrests, with a police helicopter broadcasting the riot act before the six hour conflict subsided.

The 116th Green County Fair in Monroe opens at 1 p.m. on Wednesday July 29 for five days. Cheese judging begins at 2 p.m. with graders Glen Erbe, Mr Horeb, and William Schlinsog. About 150,000 Merchant's Courtesy Tickets plus $1 cover six rides on 25 and 35 cent rides at Belle City Amusements through Aug. 1.
Five women who lived two weeks undersea win awards as the first all female underwater team in the Tektite II program. NASA officials warn eight to nine years remain before a female flies in a U.S. spacecraft, noting women must be qualified in medical or scientific fields and contribute to missions.
The Monroe Fairgrounds buzzed as displays went up for the 116th Green County Fair opening tomorrow. The Ag Chest Chalet and cheese display, built by Fair director August Burgi, will host cheese samples from ten community queens and 4 H displays. Lions Dip Stand proceeds aid the visually handicapped, and new outside bleachers were installed at the grandstand. The fair features a large midway by Belle City Amusements with about 15 major rides including a new umbrella ride. pony rides are en route.
The 116th Green County Fair in Monroe features 92 harness horses entered for weekend events. Saturday races start 1:30 p.m. with non winner 700 trot and pace and 3500 pace while Sunday programs begin at 1 p.m. with several non winners and free for all events, each purse $500.
