Three permanent residents of the Warren Hotel died from smoke inhalation in a south end fire that gutted the building. Names were Mary K. Hurst, Lewis H. Peacock, and Robert T. Schiesser. Gustaveson, 37, was treated for smoke inhalation and remained in fair condition. Firefighters battled heavy smoke, searched rooms, and broke windows to rescue occupants. no fire escapes existed and the kitchen was the presumed start point. A detective wind carried smoke for blocks as crews worked with air masks and an ICU patient remained under care.
