City Band Plans Concert Monday at Twining Park

The Monroe City Band will present a varied program of marches show tunes solos and a Junior Girls Turn and Schwing Exhibition Monday July 17 at 8 p.m. at the Twining Park Bandshell directed by Allan F Barnard with Fred Schuetze Ken Krattiger and Stan Neuberger performing in multiple pieces. The program includes classic marches from Fillmore Huff Hayes and Englemann along with operatic and show tune selections and a Tammy and the Bachelor number. The Junior Girls Turners group led by Mrs Fritz Wenger will perform. The band will also play at Monticello Homecoming on Saturday July 15 at 8 p.m.

Portrait Is Authorized Nellie Kohli Tribute Slated by Club

A portrait of the late Mrs Nellie Kohli will hang in the Arabat Ludlow Memorial Library funded by the Monroe Woman's Club. Kohli headed the public library for 40 years and joined the club in 1897, remaining a member 70 years until her death January 29 in Madison. The club will present a 16 by 20 inch gold tone portrait, with arrangements led by retiring president Mrs Sherman Hodgson. The club also announced reopening the City Clothes Closet August 24, now operating second and fourth Thursdays from 1 30 to 3 p m at Baker's Book Store rear room.

Boy Impersonates Ava Gardner in Major Theft Scheme

A 12 year old boy used a voice resembling Ava Gardner to order hundreds of dollars in merchandise from Columbia Studios and Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Packages arrived daily until parents grow suspicious and police arrest him on grand theft charges before releasing him to guardians. In other news Pope Paul VI plans a forthcoming visit to Turkey according to reports.

County Guard Unit Departs Tomorrow

Monroe Company B trucks moved out this morning to join a convoy to Camp Ripley Minnesota. The two week encampment begins Saturday with 9 000 guardsmen and 1 100 equipment pieces moving via 30 state highways. Red Arrow Division expected to mark its 50th anniversary with Red Arrow Day proclaimed by Gov Knowles.

Fuchs tops land judging at Hiawatha event with 294 points

Steven Fuchs, son of Immanuel and a Clarno Classy Clubbers member, led land judging with 294 of 400 at Richard Christen farm near Belleville. Newell Smith's Hiawatha Club team won first. Debra Indergand and Keith Haldiman among top individuals in a potluck awards program at Monkey Toe Moose Lodge.

Monticello Homecoming Weekend Planned With Parade Concerts

Monticello gears up for Homecoming weekend with a Saturday parade featuring the Monticello High School Band led by Kenneth Krattiger, a post parade concert, and a 8 p.m. band concert in the village parking lot. Trombonist Frederick Voegels and trumpet solo by Krattiger highlight the program, plus vocal by Frederick Schuetze and baton work by Karen Witt.
