Laird speeds Vietnam troop withdrawal and crop subsidy cap
Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird announced a faster pullout from Vietnam with more than 50,000 troops to be withdrawn by October 15 and forces falling below the 384,000 ceiling. The Senate also set a 20 000 annual limit on payments to farmers not to grow crops, advancing a farm subsidy cap. In Alabama a dynamite warehouse explosion injured no one but caused extensive damage and two men were arrested in Blount County.
